The Warehouse stuff is cheaper than Ikea, but that's because it's all made of Chinese cardboard. I don't really see them competing in the same space at all. Of course it has been years since I bought anything from Ikea so maybe their stuff is cardboard too nowadays.

Its thicker where it counts. I've not seen a billy have shelves sag, whereas all my warehouse bookcases have because the shelves are so much thinner. And they are only 600 wide vs the billy at 800. Also way more positioning holes in the billy and you can get additional shelves and pins easily.

Ikea to me has always nailed price to quality pretty much spot on. It's more than the cheap equivalent from places like Kmart or the warehouse, or in UK places like argos were cheaper, but IKEA always did that little bit more to make their furniture better where it needs to be that makes it last. It was always a place to kit out a house affordably and then over the years slowly replace things with nicer furbiture. Generally though you replaced it because you wanted to and could afford better, not because it failed like the cheaper stuff did.

Yes a kallax is thin walled cheap wood, but I never had any issue with a kallax failing, getting wobbly or coming broken. I can't say the similar unit from Bunnings matches that experience with multiple attempts at buying tk get broken units that are showing quite a bit of wear compared to the IKEA equivalent.

IKEA's farm to forestry conversions in NZ:

OneNews: Since 2020 IKEA has converted six Central Hawke's Bay farms into pine forestry, which they believe makes them the largest forestry owner in the district. This move, combined with the sale of at least four other Hawke's Bay farms to overseas forestry companies this year, is sparking concerns from locals about the loss of productive farmland and the risks associated with converting large areas into pines.

Ikea own 4300 hectares near Porangahau where a recent fire took days to extinguish. Locals have concerns about safety and the costs of firefighting, risks from slash etc.

I bought a bunch of IVAR shelving 30 years ago in the UK and I'm still using all of it today. Used some clear varnish to seal it and it has kept really well. We actually bought some spare shelves from Ikea in Sydney on a trip 20 years ago, which provoked a few eyebrows when it went thru the xray machine at Auckland airport.

wellygary: I'm waiting for the Spinoff story about how much they manged to buy at ikea, then get home on their cargo bike/eScooter. - (pretty sure the ikea PR crowd will have such a story planned and paid for )

Fill your boots..

Even more sneery than usual from the Spinoff,

Although If you look back on their coverage of the Costco opening you sort of get the feeling that in the Spinoff's world  if Jacinda Ardern tours the place pre opening, its OK to like it.

But if Chris Luxon is opening it, all the press coverage means the country is losing its "last shred of dignity"

To be fair, it's not really an IKEA issue. Farms were going to be planted probably in pine anyway. Probably another discussion.

I live in Auckland and still haven't been to Costco 😂

My partner is Swedish so I see an IKEA visit in my future.

The Spinoff has published a variety of articles on Ikea. I posted that one only to refute your earlier claim that the Spinoff coverage of Ikea was paid for by the company and positive. Anyway, I'm pretty sure you're just jealous because you don't have Costco or Ikea in your city ; ).

Australians jealous because Ikea NZ menu has Pavlova and Australia does not.

IKEA sparks mega controversy across Australia with tiny detail in first ever New Zealand store: 'So unfair"

I for one welcome Australians to NZ to sample our rightfully recognized cuisinal innovations ; ).

I didn't see any Pavlova at the IKEA restaurant today, was it just a opening day special?

That was once the case – today you have to look more closely ... with the same article name.

Ah maybe they rotate the menus or remove from sale if run out. Can see items there they defintiely were not selling when I visited. I only recongise two of these (lemon velvet and cinnamon bun). All good, more stuff for me to try my next trip! :)

Went for a lunchtime walk and found the IKEA pop-up next to Te Papa in Wellington, nothing for sale but had a few things setup like a small kitchen and some bookshelves. Handed over my details for their mailing lists and got a free "Frakta" out of it.

Shipping sounds reasonable for big items, for book shelving they said $89 which gets the item carried into your home. There is a cheaper option if you pick up from a depot near Wellington Railway Station.

Ahh, so that's why I'm seeing people lugging them round town,

I saw a guy at a bus stop last week with one, it still had the fold marks so assumed he'd been in AKL, ..  but sounds like they're giving them out locally...
