we are housing our neighbours because their house is in 4 pieces which seem to move further apart with each aftershock. and one of them's pregnant too. imagine how you'd feel - instead of furbishing your nursery you're worried you havent a roof when you give birth. just imagine.

Yeah I am currently living with my Auntie and Uncle - spent all day today moving out the flat before it got a big fat orange sticker on it.

Upper story has come away from the bottom story, one more largish aftershock and it's coming down.

Still got no power or water (I'm in North New Brighton), looks like every 3rd house on our street has power so must be 2 of 3 phases down. Just rung Orion and they said it could be another couple of days before we get power back.

Huge flooding at the end of the street where the water works building is, just heard water could be 2-3 weeks before its fixed. But they have water tanker available for containers. (I knew my 30 liter Beer brewing barrel would come in handy).

I've now got hold of a 400W inverter which is running my laptop, USB TV tuner and 23 inch screen, powered by my car battery, so can watch the news and top gear.

3G coverage on 2degrees has been awesome always had coverage and no problems geting hold of people.

So are the police cordons in the city gone now? People are going to work tomorrow and I imagine if the cordon is still in place that alot of small businesses will start to suffer.

I like how they have also put a graph up showing their webserver stats for Aug 4,
says in total on the 4th their servers needed 57 gig of bandwidth and mentions the benefits of Peering

As of about 1.5hr ago, there was a digger getting into the path to get the busted pipe sorted. Passed through it on way back from pizza :)

Nope still there tomorrow too (possibly shrink tonight). Most of the city will be open on essential use only, appart from the no-go

Red - Condemned until further notice

Inner cordon "NO-GO" Zone, closed to ALL incl media:
Colombo/Gloucester, Kilmore/madras

This has the serious at-risk buildings within.

You maybe interested to see that under the NZ building standards, the area that was hit by the earthquake, was in the medium to low risk area, as shown in the map below. This possibly means that buildings didn't have to be kept maintained to the highest level of earthquake standards under the councils district plan. Looking a the damage, the buildings that mainly crumbled were brick and not reinforced in anyway, and it looked to be similar damage to those old photos of the Napier earthquake. This is unlike Wellington/wairarapa, which is in the high zone. The Wellington council requires commercial and apartments buildings in wellington to be retro fitted with bracing systems, as standards are raised overtime. I am sure the map will now be updated. Also with the Napier earthquake, a similar sized earthquake occurred about 10 days after the main one, so it is something to be aware of.

"We are all OK but looks like full rebuild for our house, it is liveable but looks like the whole slab has gone up on one side and down on the other, can even get my fingers under parts of the walls and crooked windows and doors (means I get to redecorate though). Only got power back this afternoon and have very limited sewerage tonight and no phone (water undrinkable too). Still staying at friends but hopefully (when my brain allows it) we will be back in the house tomorrow. Miss 2 is all over the place with her moods and has even told me about the earthquake and what we did (from a 2yr old it is a bit weird). She was in bed with me, and Mark was in spare room, he got knocked over big time trying to get to us. But on the bright side, we are all safe and well and I did not have an early baby. The house did its job of saving us so happy about that. Very glad to hear people are OK and I send all my best thoughts out to everyone, and I will now sign off this novel, and everyone take care."

well, that sure was an interesting weekend

only thing i lost was some glassware.. my little brother had a chimney fall onto his wheelie bin though, he drove from christchurch to rangiora at about 5 saturday morning and said it was like traveling through an apocalyptic movie(he managed to choose the worst route through chch city)

OK - seems Ashburton is now seeing a flow on effect from the earthquake - people can't get food in Christchurch so they're coming to Ashburton and cleaning our supermarkets out of food!

Worst part is that our supermarkets are in the same boat as the Christchurch ones in that there is no food distribution to them currently! Ekk.

Which supermarkets are running low in Chch? I'm sitting in one right now watching the customers and all the shelves are fully stocked. Give it a week though and there will be trouble, Foodstuffs Chilled got hit hard.

That's interesting. We've heard that the local supermarkets have been told there is no distribution out of Christchurch for a time to come and they're trying to have it arranged out of Dunedin. And as of this morning one of the 2 local supermarkets was reporting shelves half empty with no immediate prospect of restocking.

And there are reports that there are quite a few people driving down from Christchurch to stock up.

Am about to head out to our other local supermarket now, so will see what the situation is there.
