Well i've been reading up on coal mining disasters in the USA their was one in Montana if I remember right with the exact number dead  (29) eerie huh.  The coal mining disasters I have read up on they all paint a grim picture I haven't come across one where the coal miners were rescued. All died in the disasters. There is really nothing you can do after an explosion but sit and wait it out.

So I think I was wrong about it. I think what got me going was watching it on TV and seeing nothing done about rescuing them. Frustration set in - as the days went by it was more they have to do something why wont they go in! I knew none of the miners that died but somehow felt connected to them I think we all did. I got really upset.

I apologized for being an idiot!

From a readers' Q and A column in TV GUIDE: "If we get involved in a nuclear war, would the electromagnetic pulses from exploding bombs damage my videotapes?"

Wow... This was a good post!

And great to see someone coming back to say "I was wrong". Not every day we see it.

I hope the various inquiries will make some useful recommendations for preventive measure that may help other mines... and maybe even get Pike River back into production. I would say the most obvious thing would be some kind of backup ventilation system, and devices to protect the main ventilation shaft.

Time to find a new industry!

Royal Commission seeks expressions of interest

Advertisements calling for expressions of interest from persons or organisations who wish to give evidence to the Royal Commission on the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy will appear in West Coast and national newspapers tomorrow.

Chair of the Commission, Hon Justice Graham Panckhurst, says this is an important stage in the Royal Commission’s work.

“Expressions of interest may be made by any person or organisation wishing to participate in the Inquiry. This will enable the Commission to determine who and how people should participate.

“We will ensure that the families of the Pike River Mine victims are consulted during this process. They do not have to lodge an Expression of Interest,” says Justice Panckhurst.

Expressions of interest close on 18 February 2011.

The Commission will soon provide more information about the Inquiry process.

For more information, including questions and answers related to the Expression of Interest process and a copy of the Expression of Interest form, go to the Royal Commission website at www.royalcommission.govt.nz
