About 4PM Friday 19th Pike River Coal Mine suffered an explosion and 29 miners are trapped. Let's hope they can get out boys out safely!

I have been reading some opinions from people against mining which to me is not cool. Let's get them out first before we bitch and moan...

Received from Telecom:

Telecom update on Pike River mine explosion

Telecom has offered any help and resources it can provide to assist the Pike River Mine explosion rescue effort.

Telecom is temporarily increasing existing mobile coverage in the mine region. Following consultation with the Pike River team, this is being installed in the valley leading to the mine and is expected to be operational by midday Sunday 21 November.

Telecom is also monitoring local mobile and broadband services to best manage capacity while there is significantly increased demand for telecommunications services due to the influx of people in the area.

Gen-i continues to provide close support to Pike River to ensure the company has the telecommunications and IT systems it requires for the rescue activity.

Telecom/Gen-i have also offered support to government and emergency services organisations.

We will extend every assistance we can to the affected families and volunteers, including free local, national and mobile calls during this difficult time.

We are committed to doing everything we possibly can to help, and our thoughts continue to be with the Pike River team and families, as well as everyone involved in the rescue effort.

I'm getting a little concerned with the police down there sitting on their hands in the name of safety. What's wrong with sending in a couple of guys with good breathing gear like the firemen have on the train that they have in the mine to have a look. The longer they wait.. though I suspect by the force of the blast it may be all bad news. Hope I'm wrong..

If you still have an explosive atmosphere, then its considered too risky as you could easily set off another blast with any small ignition source. Frustrating, but the realities of mining. Its all too easy to imagine that people could just waltz in with proper breathing gear. Its a shame that hasnt been made more clear in the reporting as I wondered initially too.

No.  But it seems the NZ thing these days.  Police super cautious and why exactly are the police in charge of this??

And who would be in charge?

a) The Labour Party
b) The NZSPCA
c) The New Zealand Army

Who should be in charge?

If the original mine exploded through firedamp then sending down anyone else who could even make the slightest spark through static would be completely dangerous.  Fire fighters are fine, they can produce static because they are usually going into fires.  If the NZ thing is to keep rescuers safe instead of risking them for the remote possibility that others might be alive, then I'm proud to be a NZer.

Try searching google for "rescuers killed"...first result:
http://www.usmra.com/rescuer_deaths.htm
All to do with mining rescue fatalities

one of the most recent is also the most chilling:

Jim Walter Resources
No. 5 Mine Explosions
Brookwood, Alabama

13 People needing rescuing, 12 people died while rescuing in 2001

I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Why not send In some sort of Remotely Controlled Vechicle? Like a Rover-style car or a quadcopter, with a live video feed, so if anything explodes, no rescuers are hurt. They mention that there is some heat underground - would that ignite any gas?

And if the miners are still alive why risk another explosion that could potentially kill them? The Chilean miners survived over a week with no contact or support, hopefully our boys can do the same.
