For the record, the Caltex in Hornby currently has petrol... so if you DEFINITELY need petrol / diesel, that could be a solution. The BPs appear to be out of petrol at Bush Inn - however the shopping centre is mostly open for food etc.
Hope this helps someone.

Mum was picking up family at Auckland Airport coming from ChCh, she said that crew from TV3 are interviewing a lot of travelers there about the experience and that. Also that the terminal is absolutely PACKED. So allow plenty of time if you're traveling through there.

From Vodafone New Zealand *AND* 2degrees:

Dual SIM card phones to aid Christchurch recovery efforts

2degrees and Vodafone are providing Christchurch Earthquake Operations centre staff with dual-SIM card mobile phones to aid the rescue and recovery effort.

The LG 310 phones, which carry 2degrees and Vodafone SIM cards, will provide rescue staff with simultaneous access to both networks as they continue their investigation of premises around the city.

The benefit of ‘dual SIM’ mobile phones is that if one company’s network is not operating, the phone can make calls and texts on the other’s.

The companies have pre-loaded 200 of the phones with credit so they are ready to use immediately. Although Vodafone and 2degrees operate their own separate networks in Christchurch, the underlying GSM technology is the same.

From Vodafone New Zealand:

Christchurch Earthquake
12.00pm Friday 25 February 2011
Update

The Vodafone network remains in a relatively strong position, with all but 17 sites operational.  Coverage is in place for most of the city with only a few black spots in the east. This is achieved through network management, optimization* and the deployment of COWS (cell sites on wheels). Two have already been deployed with a further five currently being rolled out within the city. We currently have 30 sites running off generators.

Our mobile store truck – Optimus Prime is in Christchurch and is providing much needed support to the public.  Optimus Prime is located outside Hornby Mall and is offering customers a support facility, the ability to recharge their phones, top up and purchase prepay vouchers, obtain customer service information.  It is also providing free WiFi access and ten phones for members of the public to make free calls.

Vodafone customers have donated more than $125,000 via the Red Alert text appeal in association with the Red Cross. This already exceeds the total amount raised following the 4 September quake.

Vodafone NZ CEO, Russell Stanners has travelled down to Christchurch to meet with Vodafone staff to assess their individual needs and how the company can assist. Russell joins Sandra Pickering, our Chief Technology Officer, and other staff who have travelled to assist the local team.

Vodafone NZ, Vodafone UK and Vodafone Fiji have kicked off our Red Alert appeal by contributing more than $550,000.  Vodafone Qatar has provided a credit to its Kiwi customers to help them make calls home. This is a heartfelt gesture and gives an insight into the concern felt well beyond the shores of NZ.

Vodafone NZ customers can donate either $3 or $5 to the cause by TXTing ‘Quake’ to either 333 ($3 donation) or 555 ($5 donation). 100% of all donations will go to the NZ Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal.

The technology teams will continue to restore, refuel and reparent cell sites. The priority is refueling generators to keep sites working and ensuring our transmission network remains stable while keeping staff safe at all times.

Vodafone also suggests that customers leave a temporary message** on their voicemail to let callers know the time and date, location and that they are OK. This provides some reassurance should mobile phone batteries go flat given the difficulties with power supply.

With flat terrain such as that found in Christchurch, when a site is unavailable customers near that site are likely to receive a signal from adjacent sites, effectively “filling in” the holes.  This can be improved with network optimisation.

Temporary greeting instructions

1 Dial 707 for VoiceMail.
2 Select Temporary Greeting from the main menu (Option 6) - this will take you straight to Step 7. Or select Personal Options (option 3).
3 Select Personal Setup (option 4).
4 Select Personal Greeting (option 1).
5 Select Temporary Greeting (option 2).
6 Record the greeting, press #. The greeting will be played back to you.
7 Select one of the following:

Press 1 to Record again

Press 2 to Save

Press 3 to Cancel

To remove your temporary greeting call 707 and press 5 to delete.

I've reported that site as a phishing scam to Microsoft, who have a phishing filter built into IE.  If you get a chance I suggest you do the same.. (Tools - SmartScreen Filter - Report unsafe website).

From a Geekzoner, "magnet":

VSAT Communications Terminal available if required.

I have a 1.2m VSAT comms terminal (data and voice) available to deploy into the earthquake zone if any rescue/support providers are interested, to assist in restoring comms for the people in christchurch.

Let me know. Would have to get it to Christchurch from the Bay of Plenty.

End user would have to pay for the Sat Bandwidth.

Anyone close to any agency that needs reliable comms as an alternative to the traditional networks reading this please let them know and to call me. ohtwoonethreeohsixtwosevenfive  or oheighthundredonefoursevensevenfourseven

From Vodafone New Zealand:

Christchurch Earthquake
5.00pm Friday 25 February 2011
The Vodafone network remains operational and largely unchanged since this mornings update. Below are areas of the Christchurch which have cell sites that have been impacted by the earthquake. They still may be receiving service from adjacent cell sites but they will have reduced capacity and coverage;

- Redwood South
- Waimairi Beach
- Burwood
- Dallington
- Avondale
- Chisnall
- Aranui
- Linwood
- Linwood North
- Linwood South
- Linwood East
- Woolston West
- Hoon Bay
- South Brighton

We are in the process of deploying additional COWs (Cell Sites on Wheels) to the following sites;

- Arts Building – Civil Defence Command Centre
- Burnside High – Welfare Centre
- Cowels Stadium – Welfare Centre (this will also serve Hoon Bay)
- Pioneer Stadium – Welfare Centre
- Latimer Square – Triage  Centre

Our technology teams will continue to work tirelessly through the weekend to ensure the network remains live, and to improve coverage to those areas above.

Vodafone customers have donated more than $350,000 via the Red Alert TXT appeal in association with the Red Cross. This already exceeds the total amount raised following the 4 September quake.

Vodafone NZ, Vodafone UK and Vodafone Fiji have kicked off our Red Alert appeal by contributing more than $550,000.  Vodafone Hutchison Australia have just announced they are to contribute AU$100,000 to the Australian Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake 2011 appeal. Vodafone Qatar has provided a credit to its Kiwi customers to help them make calls home. These are heartfelt gestures and give an insight into the concern felt well beyond the shores of NZ.

Vodafone NZ customers can donate either $3 or $5 to the cause by TXTing ‘Quake’ to either 333 ($3 donation) or 555 ($5 donation). 100% of all donations will go to the NZ Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal.

Vodafone also suggests that customers leave a temporary message** on their voicemail to let callers know the time and date, location and that they are OK. This provides some reassurance should mobile phone batteries go flat given the difficulties with power supply.

From Gen-i/Telecom:

I am writing with a further update from Gen-i and Telecom on our work to support the people of Canterbury by maintaining and restoring ICT and telecommunications services in the region.
A big priority has been making sure all our people and their families are safe, and we’ve accounted for all our folk right across the Telecom Group.  Like many of you, we have people seriously affected and we’re doing everything we can to support them and their families.

Our focus remains on supporting emergency services, civil defence, health and safety and government agencies as they mobilise people and resources in Christchurch to lead and support the rescue effort.  Our team on the ground and across Australasia is working around the clock to provide every support possible.

As the needs of the emergency service providers are being sustainably met, we’ve started to work with core service providers, such as banks, roading, construction, airlines and transport companies, to maintain other essential communications services in the region.

The event has created unprecedented high levels of demand for changes to our clients’ services, and we are running all our key processes with Business Continuity plans. We are increasing resources to ensure we meet the needs of our clients outside the Canterbury region.  Most client service desks are currently running at 75% of capacity, and this will improve by early next week.

For the clients with immediate needs not related to the Canterbury earthquake, we’d like to ask for your patience over the next few days as we adjust and expand our resources and systems to meet the overall increase in demand for our services.  We are committed to ensuring we meet your needs and we’re focussed on not letting you down.

We are also continuing to monitor our clients’ needs in Christchurch and are assembling a forecast of requirements that we anticipate will surface in the coming days and weeks as more commercial businesses starts to resume operations.  Our service delivery teams are ready to extend their support as the needs of our clients change day to day.

The current situation for Gen-i and Telecom IT and communication services in Canterbury is as follows:

- The state of Telecom’s network has improved overnight with the continued restoration of mains power. All Telecom exchanges are operational with a combination of mains and generated power, as are the majority of mobile sites. Overall the Telecom network is up and working, and the focus will now move from sustaining the core network to diagnosing and restoring localised faults.  Telecom’s 60 generators continue to provide backup power to network sites still without mains power

- Our two Christchurch data centres in Hillmorton and Hereford Street are running on Business Continuity plans and remain operable. Our ICT Operations teams are monitoring the two sites closely, with temperature and humidity levels stable.  Access to our 109 Hereford Street site is restricted, due to the police cordon around the CBD for public safety and nearby Grand Chancellor Hotel in danger of collapse. Our generators are well fuelled to sustain service for a long period of time and we are working with clients to maintain services remotely

- In addition to on-the-ground technical field force teams, we are sourcing and deploying ICT equipment such as servers, laptops, mobile devices and accessories.  We have shipped additional IT equipment to Christchurch and are now holding increased stock levels to help restore ICT services for clients
For some clients, we're relocating their infrastructure to Gen-i data centres or alternative client sites around the country, and keeping our clients’ businesses connected via our managed voice and data services, which are performing well

- Many clients are using our cloud solutions for virtual compute and storage, email and internet security.  We're also helping clients with contact centres to divert calls to service desks in other parts of the country, and are providing services that allow clients to maintain voice communications as they work remotely through our Gen-i Mobile Office (GMO) service.

As Telecom is collecting old analog landline fones for CH I wonder if all those on GZ who over the past year or two advocating naked DSL , VOIP fone and using their $1000 mobile in an emergency saying that the old PSTN is passed it used by date still feel the same way?? No power no smarts..

Regards,
