While most could be recycled or down-cycled, it all comes down to money in the end.

It is still cheaper to produce new plastic than it is to recycle.

A quick spot check with a sample size of the one bottle in my fridge. Both the bottle and lid are made from type 2 HDPE. So they are the same type of plastic already. Not sure if the difference in apparent "hardness" is due to the structure/thickness of the lid vs bottle or due to varying sub-types within the HDPE mix.

The recyclers probably have the upper hand. Maybe they don't want to mix colours. On the other hand if the plastic is just going to be turned into fence posts it makes less sense.

Hopefully they could come up with a loop of the appropriate length for it to be flexible enough and still be able to unscrew.

Or something.

But I guess they'll do nowt till they're forced.

Alternatives to plastic bottles are the Tetra Paks, which many (maybe most?) NZ recyclers no longer recycle.

Change is coming. There is a new entrant into the NZ recycling game that is starting to take Tetra-pak and recycle it into building materials. At the moment they are only equipped to take post industrial waste but over time they will scale their operations to be able to take post consumer waste.

I get milk in ?750-1000 delivered to my door from a local farm and they collect the empties when dropping off fresh bottles.

The frustrating process with trying to sell larger stuff online that needs to be picked up. Moved in with my now wife 3 years ago who already had her own house (I was renting), and we both had everything in terms of furniture and major appliances. So at the time I managed to get rid of some things that wouldn’t be needed but kept a few bits of furniture and things that I thought were too nice to give away for peanuts and we put them in the garage to be sorted out later. 3 years later they are still taking up half the garage and are realistically never going to be used so now trying to get rid of them. Making sure to list the dimensions, that they must be picked up and that “you will need a suitable vehicle or trailer” but getting the inevitable requests to deliver or time wasters who either don't turn up when arranged or say they want something and then just never reply again.

Had one last night who said they were coming at 7.15pm to pick up something. I waited until 7.45pm then messaged to ask if they were still planning to come and to let me know if not so I can then offer it to the next person as had a few enquiries. Replied that their "mate has only just turned up with the van and need to put gas in then we'll be on the way." Should only take about 25 minutes from where they said they were coming from but the next contact didn't come until 9.45pm when they messaged that they were in the wrong part of town, I replied trying to explain where we were and to just put the address in google maps and you will find it and eventually they turned up at 10.15. To be fair, at least they did turn up which many don't, but frustrating spending the whole night looking out the window waiting for them. And why is it so hard to just send a message to let you know they are running late or not coming?

Change.org petitions posted to Facebook. I don't know if it's user issues or the site itself, but there are zero visible details on the post other than a link saying "xx needs your help" but no indication of what for.

Given the need to then click through to find out, I don't bother and just keep scrolling.

Even the topic on the post would help their various causes.

Coming in this morning to 22 emails - 11 of which are from my boss (who is in a different timezone). Many of these emails are committing me in some fashion to an action or timeline over which I have had no say. Frustrating.

For what it's worth, I last checked my emails at around 7pm last night, so it was quite a few in a short space of time off-hours.

If you read all of that that article you will see there is wide spread opposition to the way the government is implementing SNA mapping. He's not "standing up for his right to sabotage the environment" he is standing up for his right to have a discussion about how his land might be impacted by SNA mapping. Rather than some faceless bureaucrat in Wellington who has never set foot on his farm making an abitrary decision that he must fence off a significant portion of his farm.
