neb: Note quite sure which forum to post this to, but this one seems somewhat appropriate: The REAL Reason McDonalds Ice Cream Machines Are Always Broken. A good argument against monopolies, and for the right to repair.

@neb I don't have the time and energy to watch a 30 minute youtube clip, could you summarise for us what it says...because I am curious

Conspiracy theory.

Perusing multiple websites for an old mountainbike part. Particularly facebook marketplace, having to change my location in 500km increments and repeating the search.

So time wasting. Is there any point trying to learn how to automate this?

It's times like this you wish you were in the States...

Well even in miles it still takes a long time to search the US in 500 mile circles!

It's not that I don't care, but I'd like it if people in that situation acknowledged that it was their choice to leave.

That kinda defeats the point, if you just want a brief sound bite version then go to e.g. CNN's coverage of the story (or Fox's coverage, if you lean in the opposite direction), or if you want dry boring coverage read the Wall Street Journal's coverage, but the whole point of linking to the Vox version is that they do in-depth backgrounders rather than just superficial coverage. For example at one point the journalist complains (mildly) about having to independently verify each part of an info dump from an insider to make sure it's not tainted or biased, which reputable news sources do but you never hear it mentioned.

The kind-of-pointless tldr; version is: Company with a completely captive market makes a crappy, failure-prone and almost-impossible-to-fix machine, then makes fully 25% of its total revenue from sending service people out to fix their rubbish product. When a third party comes in with a diagnostic tool to help the owners diagnose problems and fix faults, they try to get its use suppressed. The duel between the two is currently being fought out in US courts, although this time it's the third party that's going after the manufacturer.

But that could be describing almost anything, the value in the Vox-style explanatory journalism is that you get all the background material as well, not just a sound bite. In addition the guy doing it is pretty good at presenting the story in an engaging manner, a lot less dry than the WSJ.

No, this one's something that's called "investigative journalism". In particular if it's a conspiracy then it's an awfully big one and includes among others the WSJ, CNN, Fox News, and the US Department of Justice (just to name the sources in my previous post, there's lots more that have covered it).

OK, admittedly the Fox source is a bit dubious...

Yeah, and that's the problem, it's a really generic story that could be describing almost any monopoly exploiting its position. This one just happens to be presented in an entertaining and engaging manner, and it's topical for the right-to-repair debate.

Actually I didn't think much of the way it was presented. It was a bit too flippant for my liking. I lost interest and skipped to the end. Looks like there was some stuff in the middle that might have been worth watching. All the bits I watched screamed conspiracy theory but perhaps it's not.

Yeah, Vox have been criticised for that, it's not everyone's cup of tea... I see it as something to run in the background while doing other work rather than a competitor to the likes of Al Jazeera Investigates.

Thanks for writing that. I was able to read your summary in 30 seconds, leaving 29 minutes for cat and fail videos.
Unless I'm particularly interested in the topic or it's visually appealing, I much prefer a written summary - video is quite a slow way to convey information.

Software that tries to be 'clever'. Today I was writing an email and I put an email address in the Subject line. Outlook 'helpfully' added it to the To line automatically.

Later on, I was updating some code and wanted to change false to "False". I double-clicked false to select it, then typed "False". This resulted in "false"False, as when I typed the " with something selected, it decided that I wanted to wrap it in quotes rather than overtype it. Then it deselected the text so my further typing got appended instead of replacing it.

Edit: Also, Geekzone, for happily allowing the use of <code> tags in the editor and then stripping them on save, so now it's not clear which bits of my message are code and which are prose.

Then today finding a park, keying in $2 amount of time from the machine, which spits back that it will cost another 65 cents to use your card to pay.
