Handsomedan:

I have acute needle-phobia. I booked my COVID jab yesterday. It'll be in late September. I have to think about that for the next month. I broke out into a cold sweat booking it. I don't know how I'll go with the actual jab.

Ask them to do the scratch thing. They scratch a few times at the site of the injection and one of those will be the jab. Also, look away. I used to be needle phobic, but sadly over the past few years I've needed lots of them for various reasons. Also, kids make you brave.

There is one nurse at my local GP, she is legendary, I barely feel the ones she does. I always ask for her.

@Handsomedan I have received both shots and never really felt them. The needle is very thin and the top of the arm is a perfect spot. I self inject weekly and one of the shots is from an auto injector than can be quite painful. I have found the thigh or stomach is the best for that. Ask the nurse if she would inject in the thigh or stomach.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yeah, it's not the rational, "I can feel it" kind of aversion to needles unfortunately.

It's a proper phobia, where having an injection anywhere is just abhorrent. The location of the top of the arm is likely to be the best place for me, but it's the thought of the needle piercing the skin that really gets me worked up into a lather. I can't even watch a video of a balloon being popped or pierced.

Can I suggest you use mindfulness techniques to prepare yourself. Be open with the nurse about your fear, better term anxiety and yes it is real. I use mindfulness a lot with my situation and I find it really helpful. My son (psychologist) taught me the techniques and it really helps with my anxiety.

Mindfullness is great, but not always enough for everyone. I'm OK(ish) with needles, but I have massive anxiety about going to the dentist. I need about 5 valium before I can get in the chair.

It may not be a path you want to go down, but for me in that high anxiety situation I find Valium helps a lot. Which remind me, I better go and find some before I have a tooth removed this afternoon 😨

Me too; 2nd shot was supposed to happen 10 minutes ago (as I write this on the 18th).  I'm rebooked for next Wednesday - hopefully they'll have systems figured out by then, regardless of the local alert level (Wellington/Porirua)

It's a bit of a tricky one, I gave them an extra week in the rebooking in case further issues arise and a rebook to ASAP gets cancelled again.

I had a blood test a few years ago (despite my doctor wanting me to have one more recently) and I was prescribed several diazepam (which I believe is actually Valium). I was still pretty anxious, but suitably wasted enough to go through with it.

This might be my way forward with the vaccine.

Appreciate that Mike.

It may not work for me, but I have been looking at things like breathing techniques and positive visualisation etc.

I think drugs will be the answer though

There is nothing wrong with asking for a loading dose of Diazepam/Valium if that is what it takes. Good luck, stay calm and stay safe.

Thank you for doing your part for the greater good (as well as your own wellbeing of course) and persevering with the vaccination.  I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you, and I expect it would be very easy for others with similar phobias to say "I'm not going to".

Ordering something online then realising when receipt is emailed you ordered with wrong size.

So you start writing an email to ask to swap sizes when the email arrives announcing it's shipped....

I completed the email asking if we could swap as all same price rather than me cancelling order and reordering.....

Today got email saying I've been partial refunded $17 but it still lists the original wrong ordered item...

Oh well will see what turns up. Ultimately could sell on trademe I suppose..

In case anyone is wondering the vaccination is nothing like having a bloody test. In comparison it is a walk in the park.

I know that doesn't help with needle phobia. My wife has a severe aversion to needles and asked that I accompany her for her vaccination. She felt the first injection but didn't feel a thing on the second one. She didn't know it was completed until the nurse said all done.

I'm pretty sure a significant proportion of people don't like the thought of having a needle stuck into them, so the nurses are pretty used to dealing with anxious patients.

Walk in, sit down, shut your eyes and imagine you're lying on the beach or some other relaxing scenario.

Rude, impatient or overly difficult customers who expect thier IT issues to be instantly resolved, regardless of the nature or complexity of them, and being totally unprepared to accept they might have to wait as we have *lots* of calls today related to remote access issues because people can't recall the process or password or whatever else.

One guy called today asking why we didn't have more staff available.. When we told him he may need to wait 30 minutes, he threatened to call the MD and have them change IT provider. I called his boss and politely explained the situation (who strangely enough understood completely). The guy called back *very* apologetically a few minutes later. Apparently, he was told there would be a change of internal staff far sooner than a change of external IT provider :)

@networkn I feel your pain. So far our customers have been great. We have moved most of our meetings to teams. The supply chain is what it is and again our customers have been understanding. Glad to see the MD but their butt kicking shoes on in your case. You don't need entitled plonkers at this time.

I wasn't worried by his threat, more about the amount of time I spent talking to him about why I couldn't talk to him :)

A follow-up email to the staff by the MD with me included, warning staff about being patient and consequences of failing to be, was kind of amusing too.

I do understand it's a pretty stressful time for everyone, people just want to be able to work, and they don't understand technology, which is my job, and we do go above and beyond to ensure people can work as quickly as possible.
