I'm going to buck the trend here and rip into the Hobbit.

Yes the CGI is good and yes the implementation of the 3D is good, and yes the higher frame-rate is great once you adjust to it.
But these are all technical things, and while I think it's a great piece of cinema, corporate greed has tarnished it.

The Hobbit strikes me as the kind of film that, when released on disc, won't have any deleted scenes included; and the reason for this is, they didn't delete any scenes!
The Hobbit could probably have fit into a single movie quite happily, but instead the suits at Warner Brothers demanded another trilogy. And what do you do when you have a book a third the size of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' but have to stretch it out to fill three, 3 hour movies? You add stuff in and drag stuff out.

While I understand that in order to keep the audience awake it's necessary to have some sort of constant danger, but an albino Orc hunting them with 'revenge' as the only motivation seemed very token to me. Azog was long dead in the book as far as I can remember.

The other token things were appearances from Galadriel and Saruman. They didn't contribute anything of great importance to the story and Galadriel's constant telepathic conversations with Gandalf (which conveyed mundane observations in an intense way) really spoiled her mystique in my opinion.

Overall, these unwelcome intrusions from Hollywood, which includes creating a trilogy and unnecessary appearances from familiar characters, left me feeling a bit disappointed with the Hobbit.

Not to say that it's not entertaining, and I'd watch it a thousand times over before going to see Die Hard 648 (or whatever number they're up to).

Well it's pretty widely known that PJ is fleshing out the story of where Gandalf disappeared to in The Hobbit while the rest of the Dwarves and Bilbo were on their quest. While not mentioned in The Hobbit book itself (other than the fact that Gandalf left) it's fairly well detailed in the appendices of Lord of the Rings, which is the source material that's been used for the additional story arc in the movie The Hobbit.

So yes, while The Hobbit book does not include a lot of the stuff in the film, it is still included in the Tolkein timeline and documented in other books by way of appendices...and has been brought into the film to flesh out the world and provide background to the events that brought Sauron back into the picture in LoTR. So it's not like PJ is "making it up as he goes".

Hence the 1st part of the film brings us about 1/3 of the way through the actual book The Hobbit, while including a lot of history that's detailed in LoTR appendices.

Saw The Bourne Legacy the other night. Seemed like a shameless attempt to cash on the previous movies. Matt Damon was right to stay away but then if he had come back the storyline would have been much different.

It was to get invested in Jeremy Renner's character since there was no back story for him. Action sequences were okay but nothing that hasn't been done before.

5/10.

Disrespective: The Intouchables 9.5/10

It was a very nice feel-good film based on a true story. It is in french so you either need to be multi-lingual or prepared to read the subtitles. It's about a millionaire tetraplegic who employs a street smart immigrant (for lack of a better work) to be his carer. The movie is about their relationship and the intricacies of two cultures and personalities.

A good 9/10 for me also. Thoroughly recommend it. Saw this the other night in the comfort of the Shoreline in Waikanae and thoroughly enjoyed it. "French" films at their best are generally very good I find, and this one fits the bill. Right mix of energy/action, humour and "feelgood", with a touch of pathos (and, as noted above by @Disrespective, based on a true story). I have never had any issues with foreign language films with subtitles and this is easy to follow (I have very rudimentary French but cannot generally follow conversation at native speaker speed!).

Also off the see the Hobbit at the Embassy (where else!!) tomorrow in 3D/HFR - just to be able to comment on the experience, as I'm not generally a huge fan of 3D (sometimes seems to have been used just for the sake of it?). Will also see it in 2D later for comparison.

The Day The Earth Stood Still. On Freeview the other night.

0/10. The only redeeming feature was the cut of Keanus suit, which was very remiscient of his suit in The Matrix - an actual good movie.

This, sadly, was not.

I cant believe I watched the whole thing.

Epic fail.

I am know to stop watching a movie on TV if it's bad. But the only movie I ever walked off the cinema half way through it was Thelma and Louise. It was a terrible cold winter night in 91, late movie session, wife wanted to see it, so let's try.

When I said "that guy is going to do her and then steal the money" and it happened in five minutes I couldn't just stand there and watch that crap.

Never watched the end of that movie. I don't care.

I'm not sure whether you're being sarcastic or not, but there are at least three scenes that were filmed and not included in the theatrical cut. I believe that they're intended to go on the BR.

My daughter (13) was with us on the Weekend for the 3D/HFR experience, and today she saw it again at Reading/2D with friends. According to her, the 3D/HFR was much better - she specifically commented that the fast moving camera scenes were much more blurry in "normal" 2D. She also enjoyed the film just as much the 2nd time.

Well I saw the Reacher movie today.

I thought it was actually pretty good. Better than I expected. There were some fights where Cruise did a non bad job of showing Reachers power, others not so much. His character mostly just lacks the gravity that Reacher has in the books. It was still worth seeing, and I recommend it.

8/10 for me.

Once Upon A Time In America (1984)

Directed by Sergio Leone

I'd seen pretty much all of Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns but never this one until now. The theatrical version wasn't the one Leone wanted released and after watching the 4 hour version, I'd shudder to think how anyone could understand what the 2 hour version was about.

Enjoyed DeNiro's acting performance, James Woods up there as well. Some scenes overdone.. Had admiration and disdain for DeNiro's character "Noodles".

After reading the Trivia section on IMDB, the original was something like 8 hours. Might have been better as a mini series.
