Absolutely stunning new transfer.

A literate script with superb acting.

This is how you make an epic, not the bloated, CGI filled, hairy footed abortions that pass for storytelling these days.

Better than I thought it was going to be. 7/10.

Gives your sound system a good work out too.

Better than Rampart - couldn't even be bothered finishing that.

The Hobbit - 48 fps and 3D at the Embassy, Wellington.

A great film and an incredible experience. Totally immersive with the 48 frames and 3D. The missus seemed a bit obsessed with the leading man though ...

I totally recommend seeing the movie this way; it's also an amazing showcase for NZ.

Amazing, 9/10. The mark off is that if you haven't read the book you would probably be saying: "What the hell was that?"

The best way I can describe it would be to call it movie concentrate. You need to watch every single frame and then let it diffuse in your head, if you don't pay attention you will miss something and it will be important because it is all important.

It was subtle and beautifully filmed, the best movie I have seen for about a year.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

A great movie, great cast. I read the book and watched the BBC series again before watching the movie just to be sure. You don't want to blink.

I am actually reading A Call for the Dead, John Le Carre first novel and the first Smiley appearance....

Watched Expendables 2 last night... my god it was painfully corny and unbelievably bad. I didn't mind the first one, but the sequel is just plain awful.

I finally saw The Hobbit last night at the local place (24 fps 2D) and it's the first time that I've been out to the movies since getting a Blu-ray player. I'm certainly not missing anything; flickering picture, vertical lines on the screen, fuzzy sound, and for the first couple of seconds it was in the wrong aspect ratio...

I enjoyed the movie itself though and will definitely be picking up the BR once it's released.

Just saw the Hobbit - 48 fps 3D in Palmerston North.

Not my cup of tea sorry. Much felt like watching a PS3 game cutscene. Film seemed more laboured all round than last time, the actors and character relationships felt less believable or something. NZ looked cool, actually much of it felt like a long as AirNZ safety video.

I'm struggling on a hot afternoon to gather my thoughts on this, but maybe the higher frame rate made it less realistic/less movie ish for want of a better description. The 48fps was more 'clearer' / with the appearance of a higher resolution for sure, but maybe the effects aren't yet up to that as it shows up the real life to computer generated borders more or something. A bit like every higher refresh rate TV I've ever seen.

Story wise, how random were the fighting cliffs? Oh and that little hedgehog stole the show too.

The Hobbit (2D) - 7/10

I won't bother going into detail - plenty of other reviews here - but suffice to say, I enjoyed it. Definitely too long - 2.5hrs would have been better, 2hrs would have been even better. I had hoped to see it in 3D HFR, but the friends we saw it with didn't want to, so I'm hoping to see it again here in PN in HFR just to compare.

I haven't read the book, so I enjoyed watching the story unfold. The standout scenes for me were the aforementioned hedgehog, and the scenes between Bilbo and Gollum. Andy Serkis is a genius. Also great to see Gandalf again...
