People who don't understand just how tall 6'4+ actually is, or over estimate their own height.

I called a bloke about a weedeater, asked about it's max extended length after telling him I'm 6'5.

"You'll be fine, I'm 6'2 and I don't have it set to the max".

I get there and he's 5'11 at most and our grass would need to be 8" long before I would get anywhere near it.

Spending the weekend in hospital with my son, whose arm gave way while mountain biking.

He had a plate and screws put in (distal radius fracture). The staff at North Shore Hospital were amazing - never been treated better. They were amazing.

What was annoying was that the weekend was the first of "freedom" for Auckland I came out of it feeling like I hadn't had a weekend, let alone any freedom.

I'm also 6'2" - 176cm. 😅

Sorry to hear it on both counts. Hope your boy is doing OK under the circumstances.

He's a resilient young man, so is doing better than I probably would have at his age. He was pretty upset on Friday, as he envisioned a summer of being in a cast and being uable to enjoy summer properly, but the good news is, the cast comes off in 10-14 days and he'll be able to at least feel normal, even if he can't do as much.

Metservice website being the slowest to load of anything I look at (too) regularly. Is the server on the moon or something ?

For nigh on 10 days our weather forecast has been totally wrong as well. :( Statistically, they are less accurate than a coin toss.

I've been told that, statistically, you'll be right 85% of the time if you say "tomorrow will be the same as today" (for broad interpretations of "same", I guess). This may be one of the 86% of stats that are made up on the spot, however.  But, if true, weather predictors need to be a lot better than a coin toss to have any value whatsoever.

My subjective belief is that forecasts have got a lot better in the last year or so, especially the longer range ones. I prefer Windy.com because it has a nicer UI, and lots of stuff that MetVUW & Metservice don't have (e.g. cloud height, wind direction, webcams). Having said that, they all agree with each other pretty well most of the time. When they don't it's been Windy that's been correct more often than not.

Glad to hear he's ok.

Our son fractured each wrist on separate occasions (just being a kid), the second one only a few weeks after the first cast had come off so he had a summer in casts which isn't fun for active kids.

Our daughter shattered her elbow falling from some monkey bars (it was wired back together with the ends sticking out of her skin with little balls on them !). It was just before the snow in Wellington all those years ago and she wasn't allowed out to play in it.

We sat around for a bit in A&E because she said the pain was "4/10" and was quite jovial when they asked her questions. A little later a surgeon rushed in with a team and braced it immediately saying one of the bones was dangerously close to an artery and she would be prepped for surgery right away.

The three A&E visits showed us just how remarkable the staff are when treating children. I've been in on Saturday's when all the sport injuries and alcohol issues come flooding in and they are flat tack. That's a hard job to keep everyone calm.

They we're absolutely brilliant with the kids even to the point one of the ambo drivers recognised our son, come over to say hello and asked him what his sister had done.

Windy looks nice but I guess I'm used to metservice. Can't say I think they've got more accurate to me.

Maybe I should stick the old method - finger out window...wet...raining etc

And weather warnings. Why get a weather warning because it might possibly rain a bit, say east of Opotiki, which is 50km plus away. Is that why they introduced red warnings, every got fed up with the constant orange ones...

It's in Uruguay which coincidentally is also what it reports the weather for.

So this is something that puzzles me about the MetService: They are literally the least accurate weather forecaster I know of (based on an A/B test I ran a few years ago with a range of Android weather apps). When people complain about how they get it wrong again and again and again, I tell them to switch to a different service that can actually forecast the weather with at least some accuracy. Result: They go straight back to the MetService.

It's like dining at a really bad restaurant and saying "this was the worst meal I've ever had, the steak was like a burnt shoe sole, the potatoes were soggy, and the sauce was rancid, just like the previous eighteen times we've eaten here. I've already made another booking for next week".

I am unable to explain this behaviour. The only guess I've been able to make so far is that people really like to complain about inaccurate weather forecasts and the MetService provides them the ideal mechanism for this.

Some people may just have a hard time interpreting the data and find MetService simpler.

Today Windy told me we would get 11mm of rain 3-5 and then 3mm 5-7.

Total rainfall today? 0mm
