I frequently give lectures to small groups of people in large rooms and when showing video I put the laptop sound out through a small speaker system which is fine for half the room but people at back complain over not hearing. I would like a wifi extension speaker(s) that I could place at back of room that would give sufficient volume so that people (mainly elderly) can hear the audio from the laptop at the front of the room
Any ideas where I could get such a thing.

You can get USB "soundcards" with wifi transmitters in them, the speakers at the other end would just need to be powered separately.

Are you using a microphone at the front?

You could connect a Apple Airport Express. But would only work with iTunes.

JBL make wireless speakers, you'll simply need to plug the sender unit in (it will require power) as well as the rear speakers (they also need to be powered).

I have seen them as clearance items in stores for much less than this though...

Thanks That is a bit our of my price range. What I am doing is from time to time I show a documentary video for a group I belong to. I run the video off my netbook and output it to a Digital Projector. The sound I put out to a Logitech 2x1 speaker. Even at full volume it does not provide sound to people who sit at back of room. Hence the idea of using wifi to a couple of speakers that I could sit at back of room.
It is a non profit group and I would not want to spend $100's to get improved sound coverage.
I find it surprising that no one seems to have come up with a reasonable priced wifi speaker system

I'm sure you can get a cheaper unit...
But if it doesn't work properly, you're wasting your time.
JBL's are proven, maybe try and track one down second hand?

Another thing you could try is to raise the speakers so they are just above the heads of the front row
and if you can angle them slightly down.
I think the problem is not that the back row can't hear, but that the sound is unintelligible to them.

How about an FM transmitter, and a cheap old boom box.

A few bucks will get you a transmitter off trademe.

Edit: on second thoughts, range might be a bit limiting.

Maybe just get more powerful laptop speakers for the front? The ones we use here weren't expensive and they are _loud_. Easily loud enough for a moderately sized room with ~40-50 people in it to hear as long as they're not chattering.
