I have received numerous calls on my landline from the following number (as recorded by caller ID) 001023456789, over the last week or so.

I answer, and after a few seconds it hangs up. Sometimes it says 'Goodbye' first!

It is most likely an automated call of some kind. It is not a major problem at the moment, but the novelty will wear off soon, and I just hope it stops before then!

Hasn't happened during the night whilst we are asleep - yet!

Does anyone else know what this is?
Is anyone else also experiencing this?

I am located in Auckland.

I think I saw a scam recently where the caller got calls like this for a while - then later there was a call from a real person who was supposedly from some outfit that claimed they were following up on some problem calls.

Cant recall the details of the scam - the 'person' wanted personal details/money or something.
Wish I could recall where I saw the post...

Have just googled the number you quote:

I've had a few of these calls too. I got the 'goodbye' yesterday. Just had another dead air call 5mins ago, Wife picked it up, but didn't wait for the goodbye. Got better things to do!
I don't have call minder, but i've got an answer machine.
provider is Telecom.

These calls are most likely the standard "We have been notified you have a virus on your computer and give us access to your machine so we can fix it and install malware on your machine and you can pay us $$$ to fix it"

The CallerID is always false.

If their system cannot work out you are a human , after you answer it will say "goodbye". If it can work out you are human then it passes you onto a "real person" (real person = indian scammer).

I'm with Telecom for my landline, and don't have voicemail connected to the service. I have tried answering with a clear "Hello", as well as just listening. The call still terminates after a few seconds.

I am sure it is a scam of some kind, and it will either just stop of its own accord, or maybe some "Indian" or otherwise will be going to try to sell me something. I wont be taken in if I do finally manage to have a conversation!

For now I am just curious to see who else is affected, and if anyone else has any additional information.

I had a string of them a while back. I've also had the "*silence........... goodbye*" calls too.

Whenever I've talked to one of these dodgy lowlifes, they're invariably been Indian - well, all but one. He was Russian and had called about half an hour after an Indian guy claiming to want to fix my "infected" PC. I said to him, "You sound Russian, the guy that just called, asking me the same thing was Indian. Are you in India?"  He answered yes. I can't remember how it went after that, but I think he might have learned some new words and phrases that day.

Last time I had anything like these I said I was recording the conversation for the police and that there was a tracer on the line... they hung up pretty quickly after that.

Hmmm... haven't had any since then ;)

I think they will be coming out of India. I have had a number of these, as well as a number ofIndian spam emails sent through the form on my website which I think are linked, as both my phone number and email form are published together, and they were occurring at the same time.

I too have had these *silence ..... goodbye* in an Asian accent. Figured it is a computer generated call seeking "live telephone numbers for scams" ... I am a Telecom Customer.

that number will be a skype call.

play with them, we do.  Spent ten minutes one time asking the caller to please explain what a computer is and where we can find it in the house.  Then asked the next time to please explain what a viruses is.  The follow time we asked for an explanation on what a credit card is and where we find the number.  Sigh, they don't ring any more Cry

have seen some people getting agro with their phone companies demanding they stop it but there is very little that can be done to stop them calling you.

Wish I could get them to stop ringing me.
They know my name too.
I probably get 3 or 4 a week. I tell them they are lying (they hate that and get quite grumpy) and hang up.
I think I will buy a whistle.
