Hello, I am a backpacker. I am moving from Auckland to Wellington.

I was just wondering, will my mobile number change as well? If so I have to tell my parents!

My current mobile phone number is 021 244xxxx.

I was just wondering, if I am in Wellington, will a caller have to dial a different number, particularly, changing the numbers in front?

Not even if you travel to Italy, Your number will still be the same

In some countries, yes, mobile numbers are "attached" to a geographical location. In the US is common for mobile operators to actually have clauses that allow them to terminate your contract if you use your mobile most of the time somewhere else...

In other countries the numbers are "attached" to an area code like fixed numbers, but have different prefix. For example in Brazil +55 43 323... is a landline but +55 43 923 is a mobile - most 9 in the prefix are mobile.

Each country is different...

As said, here in New Zealand mobile numbers are non-geographical - they exist independent of your location.

Your number will stay +64 21... It will be "roaming" in the UK. If your friends in NZ call you they can dial 021..., or +64 21

You on the other side MUST use +64 if calling back to NZ from another country, even if you are using a NZ SIM overseas.

I always use [+country] [area] [number] in my contacts because when it works anywhere anyway.

No cause than that would be changing your mobile number

The whole idea of roaming is keep the same mobile number

Ahh ok thanks for explaining.

And the real beauty of this system is you can make and receive calls/texts to your hearts content, then complain to the media when you get back home because you didn't read the T&C's and get a massive roaming bill.
