This article paints a despairing picture of Wimbledon this year not being broadcast on either TVNZ or Sky. By contrast, my reaction was to fist-pump and yell "Yeeeessss".

If Sky is the "Apple" of content in NZ then hopefully we're seeing the gradual formation of an "Android" broadband alternative, starting with Quickflix for movies and TAB for live sports. While Watch & Bet doesn't have much content at the moment, I see serious potential as they have a major need to chase live sports content combined with a business model that (unlike FTA) can go toe-to-toe with Sky.

For regular live sports content I would happily make $10/month of bets - with the chance I might get more back than I spent!

Of course all of this is a non-starter if the Commerce Commission doesn't rip the guts out of Sky's exclusive ISP arrangements. I bet someone's parliamentary swipe card was working overtime today...

(please recategorise if in the wrong forum - the Quickflix launch topic was put here so just following precedent)

I thought the TAB was only going to show 2nd tier sports that while good were not what a lot of people would watch so get them on the cheap. There is no way they can compete on the big sports as the infrastructure needed is quite expensive.

What we here don't realise is that a high portion of the viewing audience does not want to or can't watch streaming sports so the current model still has a reasonable life still to go
