Emirates have new baggage restrictions.

Economy class customers are permitted one piece of carry-on baggage that may not exceed 55 x 38 x 20 cm and must weigh no more than 7 kg. Alternatively, the size of carry-on baggage may not exceed 115 cm (length + width + height).

Same for first class, but they allow you a briefcase as well. Duty free stuff is ok for everyone.

It says they give exemptions and I cannot imagine they are strict about it. Better safe than sorry - so I will change from carrying two items (small backpack and small carry bag) to just one item and I need to replace anyway.

I understand why and agree. A couple of flights I was on had a silly level of attendants trying to find places for things and passengers standing around doing the same thing. Emirates give 30kg in checked anyway so it is more than compensated.

Next problem is finding something to do the job. There are very few luggage/bags places listed in the yellow pages for some reason. Any recommendations for places to look? (Auckland City and north shore locations preferred)

I'm looking for something which can contain a change of clothes, 13" macbook, snacks, flight pillow + the usual range of flight guffage. My preference is something with good side pockets I can easily grab and replace toothbrush and snacks and minor items without going through the whole get it down open it up take things out lock it up put it back routine people go through with roller style carryon stuff.

Also needs a good shoulder strap to keep hands free for efficient airport terminal navigation.

Again max size is 55 x 38 x 20 cm. Any recommendations?

Budget is $200 max but a lot less would be just fine.

Thanks tvninja, i'll go have a look. I think there is one or two places in the downtown ak and queen st area.

This is one of those rare instances where both Google and physical yellow pages are complete fail.

what about Kathmandu, warehouse, any hiking store, luggage centre, clothing shops, skate shops.  With a $200 limit it shouldn't be that hard

I found plenty searching for bags with google

Google Maps. Good call. There are a few more there. Yes it should not be that hard.

Kathmandu, warehouse, briscoes, FOC, did not have anything like what I was looking for. I thought I would ask around before my next foray into the shopping wilderness.

& thanks for the tip on Luggage Centre. That did not make the google map for some reason.

Yep.... and this is a pet hate of mine.   I've travelled internationally for a number of years and managed to meet single carry on baggage requirements (and 22kg luggage), even whilst travelling winter-summer-winter for up to a month away.

It peeves me to get on a plane locally (when I'll eventually end up on the other side of the world) with my one compliant carry on bag (book, laptop, toiletries, spare smalls and shirt), and see folks get on with a compliant bag, and laptop bag (and often a similar sized handbag) and heavy coat, and cram them in the overhead locker so that following passengers, in the same row, have to move back down the aircraft to find somewhere to put a small bag or coat.

I really want airlines to enforce their carry on rules.

Enforcement is one thing, as long as they don't get pedantic and silly over the whole thing. Personally I have never had any issues with the standard small backpack with a few essentials, the trick is to be reasonable about it. I doubt the airline is going to whip out their laser measure and refuse to let you on the plane if your 0.5cm over sized, at least not any airline I have ever flown with, so I wouldn't get too hung up on it IMO.

On the other hand yes, I would love them to go rampant on those that seem to carry on more than they check in. It's all just common sense and courtesy I thought?

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

On the ruc sac front, a number of companies do light weight day packs which might help you cram in your luggage allowance. Karrimor do a 25l pack at 675 grams. Leaving you well over 6kg for clothes, laptop ect.

I´ve only ever had hand luggage weighed when it ¨looks¨ bulky. My 1500 Pelican case is one that has warranted a trip to the scales on a couple of occasions...

My current favourite carry on bag is a Cactus Zero. Made in NZ, under 500g, 15L capcity (its small to be honest) but has external bungy cords to clip on a coat or jumper if you don´t want to carry it. Happily did WLG - LHR with change of clothes, water bottle, toiletries, book and some fruit. Will squeeze my mini toughbook in at a push but you have to pack everything else around it.
