I am so over walking down the street and getting a lungful of second hand smoke. At lunchtime I walked from my office to a 2degrees store, 350M I'm guessing, 8 smokers were on the sidewalk, both sides.

I supported the legislation to remove smoking from restaurants and bars, but to be fair I didn't think that would mean that smokers would then migrate to the front of their buildings and blow smoke over me.

At least before I had a choice if I wanted to enter a bar and get covered in smoke, now just walking down the street it's just horrible.

Also I am sure I'll get flamed for this, but why don't smokers smoke somewhere that isn't going to cause people who don't want to smoke, discomfort.

Before you respond, cars fumes blah blah, vehicles are necessary overall, smoking is just a blight on humanity!

But where would that be? If you are in the centre of a large town you may have to walk for miles to get away from other people. Maybe a smoking and non smoking side of each street.

I feel for you though, I hate walking down a street with my kids and walking them through a cloud of smoke.

Smoking is disgusting. Period. I maintain a view that I don't hate smokers, I just hate the act of smoking.

Especially those who perform the act of being walking chimneys. But that doesn't mean I tolerate them either (just not to the point of hating them).

Fine if you smoke to kill yourself. Any other excuse is a demonstration of being poor willed

I disagree, I used to smoke, I loved it. So tasty and I miss the social side of it sometimes and it certainly was good for my stress levels.

Gave up 3 years ago due to cost and having a son and not wanting to smoke around him.

Personally I'd love to see it banned outright, or at the very least people who smoke outside should be in a cubicle which has something to suck the smoke out of the cubicle and into a container.

As a compromise, how about smokers smoke behind the building where

a) Less people will need to inhale second hand smoke
b) Their cigarette butts won't litter the side walks we all share

Just ban the sale of cigarettes and be done with it.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I am fed up with smokers blowing out smoke as you walk behind them and you get a face full of it

How would they feel if I spat in there face?

Agree completely, but unlikely to happen while governments make a tax profit on smoking...

...and to the person talking about "poor willed": respectfully you don't know what you're talking about (says he a medical doctor and ex-smoker).

Interestingly on the matter of will..

My mother smoked a pack a day, sometimes more, for the entirety of her teenage and adult life. She had cancer twice and recovered, kept smoking. I offered her $5000 (More money than she had in her entire life in one chunk) to quit, and she tried and failed. She found out she was dying (Cancer) and had maybe a month to live, quit smoking (didn't even have a last one) and never smoked again. Her logic was if it gave her an extra 20 minutes, she would take it. Died 8 days later. I said to her, that if it was something she liked doing, keep doing it, enjoy the last of her life, she wasn't having a bar of it.

I don't understand people.

I honestly don't understand the lack of consideration towards other people (smokers) in allowing their (by their own admission usually) filthy habit to affect other people.

I remember when I was a kid reading a Judge Dredd comic in 2000AD where smoking was only legal in Smokertoriums ... wonder if we could get law passed to do that for real ? ;-)

As a non-smoker and living out in bushy Titirangi with the cleaner air I've found I can smell smokers approaching, even when people drive past you can smell it wafting out of their cars.

I've always wondered why some pretty girls smoke as well, wonder what they'd think if they got told that for a non-smoker to kiss a smoker it tastes like licking a stale ashtray ?

I recall as a teenager getting on a bus in Christchurch sitting opposite a girl who was one of the most attractive girls I'd ever laid eyes on. We had instant chemistry, I mean real magic. We got off the bus at my stop, to head back to my place, she gets off the bus and reaches into her pocket and pulls put a box of fags. My jaw dropped my heart sank and I told her she would be best catch the next bus onward, as I was not getting involved with a smoker. Should have seen the look on her face. Interestingly I saw her about 2 years later. Same spark between us, and she said she gave up smoking, but I was in a relationship at the time.

Biggest turn off I can think of with a woman.

Learn how to hold breath? Or look on the plus side you are getting free smoke - even more valuable now that prices are going up!

I don't really care about smoking, as long as smokers pay for their health costs and put their butts in the bin.

Are they covering YOUR health costs or the health costs of the others they put in harms way?

Each restaurant or bar should have its own smoking area, away from the footpaths. Although they have this, you still see people smoking just outside of it. If its that bad, go inside to the manager and tell them. It is in some cases their own employees, and then they can lose customers because no one wants to go near the entrance of their place because it smells like smoke.
People do what they want. Theres a whole having a smoke while you wait/break culture, which needs to be broken in some way. Changing the attitudes of smokers, providing them support with quiting, and rewarding them for successfully quitting will have a bigger effect than increases taxes and bans.
Currently the tax increases are resulting in low income families buying cigarettes instead of breakfast.

And since smoking impacts visually on one's face, more so in woman then men, I would have though one would be worried that from late 30s on of having that smokers look ruining their pretty face?
