Every three weeks I work an early shift and get to park on free all day parking rather than in one of the pay and display sites (or parking building if its raining).

90% of the time I park on a spot on the left hand side of the one way system south in Dunedin. I mostly get the chance to park just before the yellow lines start meaning if someone parks to close to me behind then I can just drive away.

On Wednesday as I got closer to my car I noticed someone was in front of me. The person behind me was also far too close and as a result of trying to get out of the car park I managed to hit both cars. I didn't feel bad however about that (especially to the car in front since it was parked illegally). On the way home I thought I should have taken pictures so I called the police who handed me over to the DCC who said they could issue a ticket.

On Thursday as I got close to the car I saw a familiar red car very close to me (I had parked in the same spot as yesterday). 50m away from the car, I got out my cellphone and rang the DCC -- the same car was in the same place on yellow lines! Thankfully the car behind me was not as close, but I waited for the DCC parking officer to arrive and take photos and give the person a ticket.

Near an intersection also perchance?  If theres a corner nearby they are well off course. You are not allowed to park within 6m of an intersection (if you read the rules by the letter) either.

Not to mention the fact, insurance can waiver liability if you are parked illegally/on yellows. As its a breach in the first place.

I will usually "help" people that do that out by folding in their mirrors and lifting up their wipers. ;)

Just in front of the red car is a turn off into a shopping complex. The zone is 60km and 3 lanes plus a bike lane - people turning off are are more than likely to be doing 40-50 km when entering the turn off.

It entered my mind to do some really nasty stuff to the red car .. but then I would be in the wrong.

the owner of the red car definitely need that ticket
I don't mind people parking in places where they should not be temporarily for a special reason, I am happy to wait a couple of minutes when they are done and start moving again
but i hate it when they park over yellow lines for hours not moving

I saw this video the other day, what happened when you can not get out from a parking space when you are stuck between two cars
Get two cushions or pillows or something similar, leave one in front of your car and leave one behind your car then you can start pushing forward and backwards without damaging any of the cars :p

What a pain! But I have to say that their being parked like that does not absolve you of responsibility for hitting their cars, especially if the one behind you was legally parked - you'd definitely be liable for any damage to their car!

But I can relate. Here is Ashburton the dumb and stupid council have created some lovely car size car parks... literally - they are car sized. (they tried to cram as many parking spots as possible between 2 commercial driveways) Have ended up trapped in on previously after parking there and then someone filling the car park behind me (one in front already occupied). I now just won't park in those parks and instead use the luxurious sized parks down the street.

parking on yellow lines is dangerous because anyone coming out of the shopping center cannot see what is coming, that is the reason the yellow lines are there

I know where that is, and no its not my car.  One thing I see when I am at work, there is a parking area outside of 30 minute parks, each end was yellow lines, but they have faded a bit, when the parking warden comes past, he or she just ignores them, even though they are illegally parked.

Today I decided that I was sick of being late home on my early home shift (and dealing with the traffic at that time (which is getting worse)). So I paid Mr Wilson $8 to park in a building ..

Though if I had of parked in the same spot, there was no way I was leaving without a pad or pre-printed notes, similar to a link I just received: http://www.blameitonthevoices.com/2010/06/you-suck-at-parking-business-card.html

You could vent your feelings in writing with a fat felt tip pen on their drivers window - I've seen that done before. Gives them some thing to think about while they are wiping it off!

I know we tend to loath parking wardens, but without them, there would NEVER be any parks free for the rest of us to pay for, idiots would park where ever they felt like and general street chaos would reign!!

And no,.. I'm not one, just for the record,...but I do get to deal with plenty of stupid people in my job nevertheless!

It sounds like they dont have any interest in respecting other road users, so they might happily retaliate with sugar in the petrol etc if you do anything too nasty. But the parking wardens should be able to tow the car if its on yellow lines.

Time to find a new industry!
