Anyone out there involved in spatial data?
We are currently building a new house on our front lawn, is addressed as 8 Brown Street*, and we are currently at 10 Brown Street. This all makes sense sequentially, as the number before us is 6 Brown Street. In the recent subdivision process, our new place was designated as 8 Brown Street
But I'm noticing that a few databases simply dont acknowledge 8 Brown Street e.g. Chorus SAT, Pass the Parcel, Bing maps, NZ Post postcode finder, QV property search
While Google Maps does locate it perfectly.

I'm not so worried about those specific examples, I'm more interested/concerned generally. None of those examples should be a particular problem, it just that I can imagine getting caught out on signing up for new services, mailing lists etc in the future

What will it take for these databases to be updated with 8 Brown Street, over what sort of timeframe? Is there anyway to contact the data clearing houses and update these details directly with them? Should the subdividing process somehow magically update these databases eventually?

Interestingly, I recently tried to send a parcel via Pass the Parcel, to another address that they didnt have in their database. I called the call centre and they told me to put in a random address from that street, and put the actual address in the 'special delivery instructions' field.

NB: I have a basic understanding of GIS having studied it a fair bit at uni.

*I dont actually live in Brown Street

Come to think of it: I would quite like it if 111 Call Centres have my address in their database! Nothing in the Terralink database at the moment, and I believe they supply emergency services.

The issue may be that the databases are typically compiled from public record sites. So if the local council record that was used showed an 8 Brown Street then it would be translated across to the database. However if the original land record didn't show that address, perhaps because the original subdivision had larger land parcels so numbering was allocated to allow for later subdivision, then it would not.

It's the same issue with your Car-Nav telling you to turn into non exsistant streets. Many of the map databases were compiled from sources which record 'paper roads' and 'proposed subdivisions' rather than physical roads. Also in places like Wellington you'll get addresses that are up a staired pathway that connects two streets. These may have been designated as road reserves but the steep terrain means they'll never be more than pathways.

Compiling an accurate GIS database, and keeping it current, has a cost.... it's uncommon for companies to spend a lot on verifying the accuracy of an available free database.... and most won't pay highly for a more current one.

Hmm much as i suspected. Will be interesting to see how long it takes to update across the various databases out there, I suspect it will be years.

The place is 3/4 built now, but the subdivision documents are just being processed, so I will see how other databases respond after the public record is updated.

As an aside, geekzone has discussion of pretty much everything except geospatial stuff. Any spatial pros out there? Im doing an undergrad degree in Geography, with a focus on GIS
