Hiya - just trying to count my options here

if you need chains for nissan x trail the tyre it has is 225 55 18 - went to repco because they had a snow chain "sale" ... haha not a cent reduced of their chains so don't know why it was advertised in their sale mailer ... anyway it would cost me $300 for this size tyre for one pair ...

what other options have i got?

(we could also discuss merits of chains for all 4 tyres despite the manual saying "fit chains ONLY to front wheels")

You can get those tyre sock things which are apparently pretty good. I'm not really sure why you would bother down here unless you're heading up the slopes, you will quickly destroy them if you try and use them when it's just icey.

Snow "cables" are popular in snowy parts of the US & europe (possibly because chains are illegal on sealed roads in many states due to road damage).

The ones you get over there are much more durable looking than these: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/other-accessories/auction-482704016.htm but I'm thinking of getting a set of these for emergency use. The buy now was $35 so quite cheap as a standby.....?

I'm sure they wouldn't last long for daily use, but they are small & light enough to stash in the boot for one off's I think.
