Not unless the baby has had a full license for at least a year I would've thought.

If they are on a learner licence, they must have a front seat passenger ("supervisor") who must have a full licence, at all times. No restrictions on other passengers in the back.

On a restricted licence, you must not carry passengers other than a spouse, parent, guardian or dependents, without a supervisor beside you supervising your driving.

So a learner driver can carry baby as long as the supervisor is sitting next to him/her

There is (or was?) some sort of exception to this - when a related family member had a child a few years ago, there was something they could get that allowed them to take their child with them.

Although I cannot remember if it was leaners or restricted.  And I cannot remember who it was through, although I would get NZTA?

After all, what are you supposed to do otherwise?  I can image there are a far few people in this situation, solo mothers etc.

Correct. Also if they are only on a Learner licence, they shouldn't be driving without a supervisor at any time.

Edit: With or without the baby!

It's on other pages too, but this should do.

That's the one (quote from above page):

"must not carry passengers other than a spouse, parent, guardian or dependents, without a supervisor beside you supervising your driving."

So you can take your kids.

The OP did say 'Learner', in which case you need a supervisor at all times, no matter who else you want to cart around with you.

L drivers should not be out driving without a supervisor period. With or without kids.

R drives can drive with kids and without supervisor. (within the time allowances (5am-10pm ?) )

Yeah. Like I'd already mentioned.

Edit. And it's only if the kids are yours. Not those belonging to someone else!

Learner drivers should not be driving with a child / baby unsupervised period.

It's hard enough needing to learn / concentrate on the road let alone sort out a baby.

Last time I checked you can get an exemption on your restricted for carrying disabled family members but I'm unsure about children.
