So the other day I got a ticket for no Rego on the car - the ticket says "compliance" which means if I get a new one within 28 days I can get off the ticket.

My question is if I take the car off the road completely I.E. take it to a wreckers, can I get off it this way as well? Anyone know the answer???

Im quite happy to pay if I have to as yes, it was my own silly fault but if I legally dont have to pay then I wont :)

The car is worth less than the ticket, or less than the registration? I am surprised even if has WOF. It does have WOF, right?

You can "dispose of" your vehicle officially, ie. cancel the registration. You will then need to back pay to when your registration expired, and you will be in compliance provided you no longer use the vehicle on a road after that point.

You can't magically backdate cancellation, unfortunately, but it will be less than 6 or 12 months rego if you're only out a little bit.

No matter what you do the fact is the vehicle was 'non-compliant' at the time it was ticketed.

If you're serious about dumping it, then you should be having this discussion with whoever wrote the ticket. The Police tend to be more understanding on these issues (ie: giving you time to show it complies) than the councils. Though I expect the longer you leave it the less convincing your case.

It sounds like the ticket is for having an unlicensed vehicle as opposed to an unregistered vehicle?

The whole idea about compliance is that it allows you to rectify the problem so that the vehicle becomes compliant. Your proposed solution dosen't really fit that bill.

However if the infringement is from the police I suggest you ring the number for the Infringement Bureau in Wellington and ask to speak with an adjudicator and put your proposal to him/her and see if (a) that's an acceptable option for them and (b) what proof they would require that you have done it if it is.

Pay up the back-rego owing. De-register and dispose of the car and get a receipt. Send all the "evidence" that the car is no longer on the road, and that all accounts are up to date to the authority that issued the ticket with a nice letter advising that all is sorted and that you would like the ticket waived.

...and then cross your fingers.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I had this argument with them about a year back. I've still got brick-wall shaped marks in my forehead. I ended up having to pay the $200 ticket after disposing of the car via a $1 reserve auction on TM.

All thanks to most of Wellington not having offstreet parking. Bah.
