Heya well as the title says I have noisy neighbors, I have no idea what to do.  We have contacted Noise Control but they can't do it because they supposedly think that the noise isn't that loud when in fact it is, it vibrates throughout the whole entire house.  We live in a Housing of New Zealand house so its a unit, the stink thing is, is that the the neighbors next door to them is their friend so they wont complain about it.  We have contacted Housing New Zealand and they say that there is nothing that they can do.  It has been going on over a year and right now I have had enough!.  What else is there to do??

I don't make enough money to move so that's currently not an option unfortunately.  I forgot to add that we have tried to ask them to turn it down but they just turn it up and they don't speak english very well.

Have you confronted the noisey neighbours with your concerns and asked them to try and keep the noise levels down a little?

Even if you have maybe it's a good idea to raise the issue again with them. If you are too scared to then maybe you do need to consider options with your landlords finding you more suitable accomodation.

Did Noise Control actually come to check the volume? If not, call them again and ask for a visit.

We have confronted them several times and nothing happened, noise control did come out but not sure if they did check the volume, they say that for them to take action is if everyone can hear the noise, not just us.  I don't know why they say that though, we actually own this house so we can't get relocated.

We do own a housing New Zealand house, when we first moved in we were renting.  However we enjoyed it how close we are to the city centre where we are so we decided to buy the house.

We do have our music up but then they turn theirs up louder which is a nightmare.

While everyone is talking about escalating the issue and trying to make the neighbors life hell - perhaps you should consider what has already been suggested.... when they're at their worse, get noise control to come over and take measurements (within your home too if possible). Remember that if this fails, do it in writing so you have a nice paper trail to show any inaction. Consider faxing your complaints to noise control if they don't respond so you get a nice paper receipt with the time and date on it.
Also consider sending a letter to your neighbor outlining your concerns with their volume.

If nessecary look up what the 'excessive noise levels' are for your area are and take measurements yourself. Document everything.

If you escalate the issue, sure it might work. However it may (and probably will) just get a reaction from the neighbors (ie. starting a 'war' or them just increasing the volume). Taking matters into your own hands generally results in a worse situation.

Ear plugs, noise canceling headphones, get your house insulated, double glazed windows, thick curtains - if they keep you awake, trying moving a bookcase to the wall closest to them to dampen the noise - move your bed away from the walls etc..

Also .. don't damage your ears by having a volume war.. do things through the 'proper channels' like cokemaster suggested above and hey you could always try to make friends with them... Wink
