I guess the subject says it all - what do you recommend? I've seen Belkin ones in JB Hifi and Harvey Norman for $70 but that's a bit more than I really want to spend right now. On the other hand, I don't want to buy a no-name brand for $15 at The Warehouse for fear of safety and reliability issues.

What's the best compromise and whereabouts can I buy it?

I've used a few Jackson boards from PB Tech. Solidly made and decent, especially for the money.

I got a couple of different ones from Radcliffe Electrical (J A Russell) at Christmas time. Can't remember the brands now (but will have a look). Butt ugly, bulky things, but they are doing the job... so far. From memory they were both around the $50 mark, but one was a 4 outlet, and the other a 6 outlet.

I do wonder about the claim that specific ones are made for audio visual equipment though... they seem to cost more - am I right in thinking it is rout?

Thanks all for you suggestions. I ended up picking up a 6 way box for $30 when I was at Jaycar this afternoon. It's not a brand name that I recognise, but it has overload and surge protection and there is an Australian safety approval number on the packaging so I think it should be okay.

Arlec and elto crap gets the safety number so it really is meaningless since the tests dont include anything about longevity or ability to handle people plugging things in at an angle and bending the stuff inside.

Think I put about 4 or 5 cheapies out in the last inorganic collection because they stopped holding plugs in properly.

The jackson metal ones seem really good in the limited use I have given my one, hold the big heavy old wallwarts without them sagging when wall mounted. I just wish that they would space all the outlets out instead of only the end 2.

The AV ones will bond the coax shield to the AC earth so stopping groundloops thru interconnected devices.

I just ordered a cheapish "Laser" 8-plug unit, it has one of those "Master" ports that turns off some of the other ports when the master device is turned off, theoretically saving power. It remains to be seen what the quality is like, but it should at least be a bit better than a Mitre10 special.

As with the OP, I'm also in the market for a surge protector or two. How about something like this? Also, do the ones that have protection for phone/ADSL interfere with the quality of the ADSL connection? For that matter, are they necessary at all?

I have a Belkin 6 way AV, seems pretty good. Some nice details including a rotating plug. Got it from Ascent.co.nz
