Person breaks law. Feels hard done by. Videos result. Posts video. Media frenzy ensues.

This kind of thing annoys me.
Yes the guard over reacted - but only from the parts of the video that were shown. The poster doesnt have to post parts that show himself in a bad light. From the clip shown you know there are parts missing.

These 4-5 teenagers WERE doing something wrong and got caught. They should be facing the consequences of doing that. The guard who was put in the situation now has the spotlight firmly on him.

So what if its gone viral. The media should take responsibilty for demonizing the guard and in a way promoting breaking the law if it makes for good youtube footage.

The video, for those who think it is worth a watch. Personally, I think he should have called the police and filed a complaint and trespass order.

Good on the security guard. Ok, he may have over-reacted at the end, but the dicks were trespassing on private property, and they were being obtuse.

Nothing I've seen demonised the guard but then I rarely watch TV news. Some in that group of skaters were clearly annoying little ****** and well practiced at it. It was a bit too much for him to handle and he eventually over-reacted. It was a challenging situation. All caught on video. End of story.

Not that I've seen much coverage of this, but demonizing people who overreact in situations like this seems to be a favourite pastime of the media... must say I have very little sympathy. Yes the security guard certainly overreacted but when the kid says something like "I've been through this before; we called the cops and they just say you giving it back" I think it pretty much sums up the situation and the respect many kids these days have for authority.

Thats the main part that grates me - yes it may have 'all' been caught on video but normally only selective parts are shown. You can see from the videos that there is obviously some editing going on.

It paints the guard in a bad light as only one biased point of view is shown

Classic two wrongs don't make a right, the teens were clearly tress-passing being obnoxious but the guard had a brain explosion and over reacted and damaged property he didn't own.

I mostly agree, It annoys me when people target the ones in the right.

The guard was in the heat of the moment, the others weren't there, they didn't know the full story and yet they trash the guard.

The guard may of over reacted, but honestly I believe they deserved what they got. Kids at that age are fully aware they are in the wrong and they need some one to tell them that.

Lets also not forget that they were harassing that security guard verbally and not to mention, they were videoing him.

I for one hope he doesn't lose his job and don't feel any worse off for those kids.

It'd be a rare case for any incident involving a skateboarder to not have the at-fault party being the skateboarder, their particular subculture seems to delight in making life difficult for everyone.

This is like saying it is rare for any incident involving a drunken person on queen st not to be the fault of the drunken person, therefore people on queen st are at nearly always at fault. There are plenty of good kids skateboarding who vastly outnumber the idiots. I'd hate to see a similar hate culture develop as it has for cyclists.

Typical of the tabloid media our mainstream providers have now become. Balanced, well investigated, and thoughtfully presented news and events are now reserved only for kids bedtime stories. Viral video's alike, it's all designed for shock and awe. Can't let the truth get in the way of a good story!

It's about time the adults took charge of this world again, and kids learned some respect and manners. Good on the security guard. In my youth the kids would have also got a good thrashing, with the support of the parents and authorities.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I think the use of the word 'incident' in the quote by stevenz shows this is not the start of a hate culture.
I agree, there are some good kids on skateboards, they are generally not involved in 'incidents'. A good example being recent news coverage showing an assault at an Auckland skateboarding event.
