Hi all,

I am doing a slightly different career change.  The agencies have put me forward for roles eg., fixed term contracts or temping.  Re: temping, how do people look for more secure jobs.  As they know you are a temp, are they ok for you go to other interviews while you are employed as a temp?  And in regards to fixed term contracts, are they again quite happy closer to the end of contract period?

What about the recruitment agencies themselves?  Would they happily assist you after they put you forward for a temp role or would I need to find another agency?

Many thanks.

Temping is an ideal stepping stone to a permanent job. Just let your recruitment consultant know what you want permanently and let them know what you are happy to do in the meantime.

The temp agency might love you – they get a fee while you temp and they’ll make a fee when they find you a permanent job.

Most employers who take on temps understand they want something permanent – they are usually pretty OK with letting you have reasonable time off work to go to interviews.

I am short term contracted to a company through a recruitment agency and I can assure you that while I am contracting they are not keen to help me secure permanent work elsewhere. Problem being they are a bit of a specialist recruiter in my field (Supply Chain) so closes off a sizeable sector of hte market for me

Mind you what started out as a 3mth contract has so far extended a few times for a total of (so far) 11mths duration and there is a strong possibility that I will secure a permanent position in the very near future

Live a month at a time and just see how it goes would be my advice

That would be a struggle.  Each party can give 2 days notice to end employment.  The temp job is different and I am taking a pay cut to initialise that career change.

I've got a two week clause and job security has always been high on my agenda but redundancy last year forced a rethink for me
