Hi folks,

Today we were walking with our 3 month old puppy, her first day out for socialization. Barely 50 or so metres into the Mall from the Avon River end we were stopped by some cleaners and told dogs were no longer allowed on that stretch. When did this happen?! We did not see any signs stating this prohibition in the area at all! Is this a new thing? Or have we been doing this illegally in the past pre-EQ era?

That's a shame, Christchurch has always been so dog friendly. Which is why we love it.

I don't believe so, I've made a mention to Christchurch City Council Twitter account to find out about it.

Having seen many dog owners have brought their furry companions into city mall and cathedral square.. Either the matter was blind-eyed by authorities in the past or now it's been strongly reinforced.

Internet is my backyard...

Sadly that document lists city mall and the cathedral square as prohibited areas. You could be right though, maybe they were just ignoring it. No one can say no to a Samoyed lol.

I thought they were wanting to encourage people to stay in christchurch and invest in it's future. Sounds petty and I have never heard of that sort of problems before in my local city. Surely that sort of bylaw is for when there are lots of people around or people not picking up dog muck, but I doubt there are too many people around there at the moment.

You have to remember quite a lot of people do not like dogs. A lot of people do not control dogs or pickup their mess. So banning them from busy public areas at certain times makes a lot if sense.

I used a mobility assistance dog until she passed away. These dogs are allowed access everywhere. One of the issues I've had in public places is coming across badly behaved, aggressive and uncontrolled dogs. Unfortunately, for my security and that of my working dog, restricting access for other dogs seems like a good idea.

I *wish* all dogs could go everywhere. I'm a dog person and I understand people want to take their dogs with them. Alas, too many badly trained dogs abound. Too many owners who don't really care. And the people who do care, who are good dog owners, they end up paying :(

Rotorua has a complete ban on dogs in the CBD and i thought it was the same in all big cities, dont remember the reason why and as far as i can remember there was no big outcry.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Palmerston North and Feilding have banned dogs from CBD areas for years and I thought all NZ cities had. For these two, its at least 8 years since the bans were brought in for "hygiene and safety reasons".

Perhaps a WOF for dogs/owners that could allow them to enter cities. Dogs that are used for health reasons, such as blind and epilepsy dogs can still enter.

I can actually understand perfectly that not everyone is a dog person, and there are bad apples in the dog owners population. As usual it was a bit of a knee jerk reaction on my part, especially when you have a cute fluffy 3 month old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy at the end of your lead, and a group of people fussing over her :o)

Personally I don't think certifying dog owners as "fit for city visits" is a viable solution either :o) As it stands service dogs are already allowed in I'm sure. All the other folks (including ourselves) will just have to go elsewhere. We went for a walk along the Avon and the stretch of Worcester up to Canterbury Museum and had plenty of socialisation time for puppy.

It *is* a shame that there are such restrictions. Conscientious owner of well behaved dogs ought to be allowed everywhere.

I don't know what the solution is for everyone to be able to enjoy public spaces.

As a wheelchair user, working with a dog, I have often felt unsafe. In the UK, there is an incredibly high number of dog attacks on guide dogs (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18386963 ). That's a problem. Consider it costs approximately NZ$45,000 to train a mobility assistance dog, an attack on a working dog is... problematic at best.

I'm somewhat tempted to suggest a ban on children in some public places as well.

They can be just as out of control, and what's worse, you can't have them put down if they bite you :-(
