Just wondering how much the customs charge will be for an item worth US$3500?

Depends entirely what the item is.

You'll have GST for a start, then customs handline/processing fees, and then customs charges (if appropiate) on top of that.

You will be responsible for:

Import Tax: 15% GST (~$420)
Processing Fee: depends on carrier (DHL is ~$30)
Disbursement Fee: depends on carrier (~$10)

and any Tariffs depending on the type of good. Computers and electronics aren't subject to tariffs, but items like clothing for example are.

It will be at least 15% of the invoice plus shipping costs. Add to this any tax that may be required (if any), processing fees by the importing company acting on your behalf.

And the obvious one of the exchange rate. As far as I know that is not necessarily the headline rate that customs use, but one set at intervals. This may be to your advantage or detriment depending if it is going up or down.

It starts from anything coming into the country that is not with you. They only try to get the money from you if the amount is over $60 though. In effect you wouldn't pay GST on anything under NZ$ 400 (incl shipping) - but still liable for duties if applied.
