Hello Team

I live in Meadowbank in Auckland and the council has decided to spend my valuable rates money on redoing the footpathes on St John's rd.  I am not complaining about that as they were pretty poked and did need it.

Now I am courious as to the other activity going on at the same time.

Ahead of laying the footpath they are installing a green pipe(100mm) which will be directly below the finished footpath.  Then at almost every powerpole(or telephone pole) they have a smaller 50mm branch that comes to the surface and is currently terminated with a red cap.(I can see these on both sides of the road).

Please see the pictures below.

What is this pipe for???
Undergrounding power?  (Looked on Vector's site and can see St John's rd as a current project)
Fibre?   (Seems rather large diameter to me & I am sure fibre runs down one side of the road already)

My curiosity has got me on this you so could anyone help?

Thanks Patrick

Hi, yes thats Telecoms, and I can only presume they are getting their ducts in while the paths are up. As its stopping at every existing copper drop off (pole) then its most certainly going to be used for UFB fibre.

That's UFB being installed. A huge area from Meadowbank back to Newmarket is all part of the current UFB rollout.

Various utility providers liase with city councils. If the council is digging up the road or footpaths, they will work together to replace or upgrade in-ground services concurrently (when possible).

So you're saying I can get UFB faster if I go destroy our footpath?  We're right beside the edge of a Chorus UFB zone which has no scheduled progress for 3 years.

Highly unlikely. While it's possible that they'll install ducting for the fibre, it's more than likely that that's all they'll do - fibre would be installed into those ducts later.

In most cases it's only microducting that is being installed. The fibre itself is blown to the csutomer as needed.

My understanding was that the colour of the conduit is related to the contents inside.

Orange - mains power
Green - telecomms.
Purple - fibre.

Is this not the case? If so, why would green be used for UFB?

Cheers
David

Green - Telecom
Purple - I think Saturn (TelstraClear used to use this)
Yellow - Gas

Just to be the nitpicker - Green is now Chorus, and Saturn/TelstraClear also use a white or grey a lot

Orange is power, blue water, green phone. Red I'm not sure, but I've seen it used for water.

There are generally accepted standards for pipe colouring...

http://www.duluxprotectivecoatings.com.au/technotespdf/5.4.2%20Pipeline%20Identification%20Colours.pdf

Blue = Potable (eg. drinking water)
Red = fire-fighting
