What is this?

You're a pretty intellegent lot....

Does anyone have any idea what this machine is for? It's sitting in the carpark beside my Perth office.

Notes:
 - this thing is in WA (that's Western Australia, you know, the state that's 1/3 of the land mass of the continent)
 - it has a Leightons sticker on the top - they are a major contracting company in the resource and mining industry

Don't make me go down there and ask someone!!

Hi, its a drilling rig, they load drill shaft sections into the bit on the left, obviously the first one will have a drill head on it, then as each section goes into the ground they load the next one on and couple it to the one sticking out of the ground.

In the very bottom of the head is a rotating sleave that grabs the shafts and rotates them to cause them to drill, but also slide down an into the ground as the drill takes action.

I use one of these when I get a particularly bad flu. It's great for sucking all the rubbish out of your sinuses, now that you can't buy pseudoephedrine without being made to feel like a criminal.

There's something similar doing horizontal drilling in Hamilton CBD for UFB right now.

I think Cyril is right, it's a drilling rig but not an ordinary one...

Looks like it can drill around corners Wink

...and this one is specially for people who don't want to get their feet dirty, as the cab is a loong way from the messy bit

(....but I think its made for use underground for use against near vertical faces. Maybe to bore the blast holes or drill and place the tie pins for the netting liners. To save yourself a walk you could always zoom in on the pictures/diagrams with your camera.)

Got it oxnsox!!!

One of colleagues was discussing it with a guy from Leightons while having a fag.

Used for drilling holes to place charges/explosives. No good to me - won't dig the garden. Might be okay for fencing...

I guess it depends really...., on how much garden you have and where you would like to move it to.
