NZ Post

Whats happened to NZ Post these days?

A fathers day card posted and stamped correctly on the 31st August in Hamilton, arrived in Rangiora today the 5th September. It was also marked with a  "Fast Post" label.

Is this a one off or the shape of things to come for snail mail?

Imagine how fast it would have been if you'd emailed it from TelstraClear!

I went and had a look at their site and it looks like they've changed the target times again!

I looked a few months back and was surprised to see fastpost listed at between 1 and 4 working days (from memory). I see that FastPost is now back to a target of the next working day.

The post has certainly slowed over the years as bills coming to us in Mid-Canterbury from Auckland usually take a week, where as a few years ago it was only a couple of days.

If it went through Waikato processing on the 31st, it should be delivered to Christchurch for delivery on the 1st assuming the Fast Post standard. Was it a Rural address in Rangiora as that can add delay, additionally any environmental factors could impact the movement of Fast Post via planes on the Friday?

Post is a dying sunset industry that's not even breaking even any more... you can expect to see increased time frames in the future.

At least he got it. I posted a card recently, which I purchased a stamp from a local NZ post shop for it, so they knew the size. A week later it was returned to me because it needed $1.40 of stamps on it because it was square and oversized. Even though the area was about the same as a standard sized normal envelope. They had also franked i which I don't think they should have done as it was never delivered, and stuck a sticker on the envelope which was handwritten that it needed a $1.40 worth of stamps, this ripped the envelop when I removed it. That must have cost them more than 70 cents in time to do, including resending it back to me.
So to resend it was going to cost a total of $2.10 with the first stamp. So instead I just stuck another 70 cent stamp on it with the franked 70 cent stamp, and it must have got there. But huge inefficiencies there I think, and not much customer goodwill when that sort of thing happens.

A friend of ours has a family postcard from the 1920's sent across Wellington and apparently received via the first postal delivery of the day (I understand there were two deliveries a day) arranging to meet someone in town that same afternoon!!!

I guess on the other hand it was the cheapest txt equivalent of the day.

A timely thread, at least for my comment.

I sent a Fast-Post item in one of their pre-marked bubble bags from Chc on Friday the 31st. It was in the suburban Auckland mailbox the next day. On the same 31st an item was sent to me via Courier, from Auckland. I've yet to see this package. Both were a similar size

When was Franking seen as an indication of delivery? (This would involve the actual Postie franking each item just before dropping it in your mailbox)

A Franking mark is merely an indication that the item has been accepted (and a fee paid) into the system. It's a way of cancelling the value of the stamp (which is it'self a receipt for your money) so that it cannot be used again.  I've never thought the Franking mark indicated the fee was the correct one.

In the past when I have had something returned, it hasn't been franked.
But I wasn't going to repay for that again for the franked stamp, especially when the post shop sold me the wrong stamp to use. They were contracted to deliver the item which they failed to do, so it shouldn't have been charged for (franked)

This issue becomes more common at Christmas, gift cards tend to go for odd shapes and these often fall outside the guidelines for a Standard Letter, hence the price jump. A pain really that shops don't better advise the customers on this.

Yeap totally. I think it is a little bit petty of them too. The weight and overall area isn't any larger for many cards either, so it isn't actually costing them any more to deliver non standard shaped envelopes, and it doesn't create much goodwill when they return them. It actually meant that I wrote the person an email, with a photo of the card. It is now less likely I will use them again to deliver cards. $1.40 to send a card within NZ is expensive compared to other countries. The only time I now mail anything is through business when they often send a prepaid envelope. eg Share correspondence etc.

Actually can cause some impact, definitely not as cheap to process as standard letters. I think you'll find at Xmas time it would less likely be returned. Royal Mail in the UK recently significantly increased their postage costs. Close to the cap imposed by the Government. Fuel costs will have impacted no doubt.
