Not recent news - but I see the TVNZ avalon facility was mentioned today as being up for sale - I think TVNZ has been trying to get rid of it for quite some time.

I really hope someone has had a thorough search of the whole place for old video tape/film. There must have been a lot of BBC tv programs that went through there over the years that are now in the missing presumed wipe category.

Amazing how much of the stuff that has been recovered came from the 'colonial' broadcasters who had accidentally kept a copy of something in a cupboard.

Who knows - maybe a few vanished treasures (Dr Who etc) might be sitting in a box somewhere.

You could be right; who knows what they'll find in there. I think some of the old Looney Tunes cartoons are missing too!

The Avalon tower has been for sale for a while. The Avalon site is made up of three areas. The tower block (no longer owned by TVNZ and hasn't been for many years and is for sale). Secondly the studios next to the tower where TVNZ made many programmes in past years. These TVNZ studios are also for sale. Thirdly there is the Television New Zealand Archive which is not for sale. This is where TVNZ keep an archive of their New Zealand produced news and sports programmes.

This archive is for New Zealand made programmes, not overseas programmes that were screened in New Zealand like Dr Who. TVNZ would not have had the rights to these programmes so would not have copies of these in their archive library.

I thought that had actually concluded the sale of the studio months ago, has something fallen over, or is it just sloppy reporting....

Maybe.  Out Of The Unknown series 1 and 2 would be a good find as the BBC trashed most of them..  They would more likely to be lurking in the cupboards of old Shortland Street rather than Avalon which was a more recent  building..
