Hi,

Is it possible somehow to send a txt message from your computer to a  cellphone?  Do any (or all?) ISPs offer this service?
I'm with Xtra.  And Telecom for phone.

Thanks,

Nick

It's the mobile carriers that provide the service not ISP

I use an Android app that allows you to link the phone to your web browser and send texts via the app. It still uses your phone.

if your with vodafone (mobile)  you can create an email address xxxx@vodafone.net.nz and when an email arrives there you can get a notification via text message that contains the 1st 160 characters of the email.

Glad to see that Vodafone keep their customers up to date as to what they can and can't do.

Oh well guess it's lucky that I managed to get myself one of those @vodafone.net.nz addresses :)

For home type use SMSFun works well for free. I don't recall how it behaves with the different telecom numbers, try it.

Most telcos have paid services for business use.

Skype offers the service also.

$10+GST/mo, includes 25 texts then 18cents each.

Telecom also have http://www.telecom.co.nz/eTXT

I never found any that allowed you to have a text plan, so if you plan to send lots then it's a lot cheaper to do it via your phone (assuming you have a smartphone). I used to use samsung kies, but there will no doubt be other apps that allow you to send sms from your computer if your phone is connected to the same wifi network as the computer.

I'd take a guess and say the service was ended around ~2005ish.

There are far too many issues around such MPP billing based service where end users are spammed and don't want to pay the bill.

I've used that service before - it's not for content you consider private, that's for sure - every Net24 customer can read the text messages you send, because they just add you as a subaccount to their Message Media subscription, and everyone can access delivery reports.  They also charge the same as Bulletin.net, who just charge for each text (no monthly fee) and have the advantage of being able to reply to the text messages too.  They also support Outlook integration and email-to-sms-to-email.
