If I win (i did!!) an airline ticket to Hong Kong, are airport taxes/fuel surcharges normally included?

They'd disclose that in the small print of the competition. I'd be pretty surprised if anything extra was covered, but you never know.

Ah. In normal circumstances, is the "fine print" supposed to be on the website of the competition? The fine print did not state any of that (Additional charges).
The guy just sent me an email "one month" later!! with an attachment to the terms and conditions (which looks as if it had just been whipped up on Microsoft Word!).

It's usual that competitions have T&C clearly laid out on the page or in a link for reading before you compete.

It's also usual that travel awards do not include any taxes, visas, documentation and ground transport costs.

Okay, so if it didn't say that taxes etc were not included with the ticket, am I allowed to get the ticket for free?

Argh, this is such a pet peeve of mine.
If you can't buy an airline ticket without paying a "fuel surcharge" or "bullsh1t tax" then it is part of the ticket price.
I can't understand why it's not a legal requirement to state the full inclusive price of things like airline tickets.
I don't care if its a fuel, landing, departure surcharge, whatever, it's part of the ticket price.

/rant.

So in my opinion, unless it's specifically excluded in the T&Cs which you must have had access to at the time you entered the competition, it's included.

Cheers,
Joseph

So just to confirm, I am allowed to tell the guy that I am getting the ticket for free (without tax prices)?

Thanks!

Also, are they (the company) allowed to send you the terms and conditions like about... one month after you've won the ticket and expect you to follow them?

No the terms are what you agreed to when you signed up to the competition, I don't think they can then send you new ones. What is the competition anyway. It isn't one of these so called wins, where you end up paying more in add ons, than you would if you just purchased the ticket yourself..

The competition is a WTV (Chinese TV) competition, where you had to text in a code from a store and you would be entered into a weekly competition to win a small prize. Then if you had texted in at least once, you would be entered automatically into a grand prize, which is for one airline ticket to Hong Kong.

I can get you the website, but it is in chinese and there is no way to translate the page unless you manually type in the characters.

Just received an email from WTV and this is what it says:

1. The prize is an air-ticket 機票, this should be clear enough to distinguish from a ?trip?. In general practice, if you buy an air-ticket from an airline, they will split the cost of an air-ticket, fuel and tax to you. When we specify the prize is an air-ticket, in common sense it refer to the cost of an air-ticket, it won?t include fuel and tax.

2. We had added ?Special Terms & Conditions Applied (條件限制) in all of our promotional materials (including TV, radio, printed leaflet), please refer to the leaflet as per attached. That means there were some conditions for the prizes as well. There?s no exception for the air-ticket.

3. WTV is the organizer of the promotion, and WTV reserves the absolute right for the final explanation to all the rules and logistics (本次活動由 中華電視網主辦,並保留最終解釋權)

So is that allowed? Taxes are not included because of "common sense"?

To be honest, if you agreed to the TOS then that's what you must follow. If it doesn't include taxes etc then you kind of have to accept that or just forfeit the prize really.

How much are they asking you to pay?

if its under $100 then its not really something to complain about & I would just be happy I won a free ticket to Hong Kong

There used to be a law where in a competition, the price had to be useful as it stood, and it must not be necessary to purchase an extra thing in order to make it useful. Such as, a battery powered item that doesn't come with batteries.

This was a long time ago - is this still the case? If it still exists, would it be applicable in this case?

IIRC arrival tax to Sydney last time I went was something like $60, combined with potential fuel surcharges, departure tax (total BS), then the hidden fees could easily be close to $100, can't see them exceeding it though.

This is where ticketing agencies piss me off, just lump all your extra various fees into the price of it rather than doing a poor job of hiding them. I'd be less annoyed just paying $5 extra than knowing I'm apparently paying $5 for the privilege of printing my own tickets.

Ouchh. That sounds really high for a 'prize' that is supposed to provide something for free. DO you have the $416.65 detailed as to what that covers. When you buy an airline ticket, you don't have to pay for 'fuel', so I am not sure what they mean by that. Airline ticket prices should include fuel, as that is part of the ticket price. It is like buying a bus ticket ,and then them charging you extra for the diesel for the bus on top of that. Or is it some levy. I would have thought that the only fees you would pay is perhaps the departure taxes, and the cost of getting yourself to the airport

Not sure if this applies from the Department of Internal Affairs website

http://www.dia.govt.nz/Services-Casino-and-Non-Casino-Gaming-The-Rules-for-Running-a-Gambling-Activity#four

(13) Prize winners must not incur costs additional to the cost of participation in the prize competition when claiming their prize.

You may want to contact them about it if you have concerns.
