Hi,

Hoping someone can help me...

I've been all over the net, but this being NZ could hardly find anything...

I'll be starting at University of Auckland next year as a mature student (already applied an accepted so am not going to apply for Otago, Vic etc) and am desperately hoping that someone can help me with the accommodation. I've applied for Parnell but it's pretty far away so am looking for change my selection. Does anyone have any recommendations for another self-catered residence?? I asked about Park Road but they give first priority to post-grad.

Has anyone stayed at Parnell, or Huia????

By Auckland standards Parnell is just about next door to the university - assuming you are at the campus in the city.

The Huia residence is in Newmarket - also close by.

Have you had a look on google maps?
I assume you are not familiar with Auckland at all.
You might also want to check maxx.co.nz and check out the transport routes...

New market is a walk down the road from AU, and busing around the central city is quite a good option if you don't want to walk as there are hundreds of buses.

I have quite a lot of mates who study at AU and they live in the outskirts of New Market, still reasonably close to the city.

I study in Pt Chev, and live in South Auckland. It takes me about half an hour drive each way on a good day, I just got home now, took over an hour due to bad traffic. I think new market is fine :P

I have not stayed at either but I can tell you the Huia Residence is closer to the k-rd queen st part of the central city for daily shopping and night life and has a slightly better choice of bus transport links for getting around the larger city as a whole. The Huia residence is slightly closer to some parts of uni. Huia is only 500 meters from the park entrance anyway. Some ok little cafe's nearby and the med school nearby has a great cafe going before 1pm or so.

The Parnell residence is right on the edge of the Auckland Domain which is a substantial park and perfect if you want to open your door and go for a run in the morning or just want the pleasure of walking through the park to uni. Buses take slightly longer because they do not go through the park but go around it and not such a big choice of destinations from the doorstep. Parnell is a nice mostly quiet boutique shopping kind of place and good takeaways etc and some little art galleries. It has restaurant type night life mostly and an Irish pub. There is a nightclub as well. [Edit: forgot to mention the current prime minister lives in parnell lol]

My impression is Huia is more like a high rise apartment complex and the parnell set up is more low rise wooden built apartments some with their own little decks.

Location wise you cannot go wrong with either.

Get on Google Street view and go for a walk. Make sure you look at the parnell apartments from the domain that is the best view of them.

I'd say unless you get into the Halls of Residence (O'Rorke, IH etc) then you are not going to get any closer. I lived in Parnell for a year while at Uni, was only a 10-15 minute walk to lectures.

I don't know how 'mature' you are, I'd say the O'Rorke and IH may be full of 1st years (18 year olds). I was in O'Rorke for a year and it was pretty much a piss-up for the whole year.

Assume you mean the Auckland Uni Parnell flats? Its really not that far at all and a nice walk through the domain.
