Disney has acquired LucasFilm and already has plans for the sequel trilogy to be released in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Disney also got ILM and Skywalker sound making them into an industry behemoth.....

5 years ago I would have been very worried by such a move, but they have made a respectable fist of their PIXAR acquisition, and MARVEL has worked out pretty good too.

As long as they can afford to pay Joss Whedon to direct, and they can manage to keep George Lucas tied up in the basement, I say go for it!

And we did the "Star Tours" attraction at Hollywood Studios today too! I did over hear a couple of people talking about it in the line but hadn't heard the whole news at that point so I did wonder what it was all about!

I guess it will save Disney a whole swag of money paying rights and royalties to Lucas and that money will stay in their own back pocket!

+1, hell yeah!    He does currently have a deal with Marvel studios, which is a part of Disney so here's hoping....

There was this in stuff yesterday.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/blogs/the-picture-palace/7888272/Why-the-Disney-Star-Wars-deal-is-exciting

This is my favourite bit:

They could play around in the background of the classic trilogy, a bit like Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, ... .

I can't see that kind of thing happening.

Awesome would be something similar to the JJ Abrams retake of Star Trek which was good but sadly I think it will be all about bang for buck like usual with a major studio.

The dark side is seductive.

Imagine if they did get Joss Whedon to direct it.  And based it on some of the awesome novels that are out there.  And No George to ruin it.  Wow.

But if Ep 1 has taught us anything, it is that holding out for a new awesome Star Wars film can be a very dangerous enterprise.  So I'm going to take it as it comes.  And keep watching the only ones that matter :)

Nobody does merchandising better than Disney. Disney films almost always have an engaging story. Disney is good at creating characters.

Lucas last three films were space soap + action. The characters were the story.

In the original the story was always bigger than the main characters with the action telling the story. Disney is very good at focusing on the story and giving it a lot of heart.

Disney's sci-fi record to date is passable but they have no record in creating many and varied complex and alien environments and many alien characters in one film.

I hope not but my guess is Disney will be inclined to reduce the geographic scope of the stories, but other than that they will make movies more in the spirit of the original film.

You mean Darth Duck. And Chewie is taken. Be careful what you wish for. Powerful the force is.

Evil you have summoned. Bad, very bad.
