Anyone here been playing around with Google's Ingress project?

Not entirely sure what it's all about to be honest, but it seems like an intriguing concept.

I just side-loaded the app and got an invite a few days ago. It either wasn't available for my phone, or not available in NZ, as per usual.

Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, tips, experiences?

It's in a invite only beta, lots of people have signed up for it, but do not actually know of anyone in NZ giving it a go

Does indeed look very interesting.... definitely keen on an invite if you get one yourself (apparently you get one to hand out when you're given one... perhaps we should hand them down this thread if someone gets one?)

Indeed. You are right.
Although, the invite button in the app is currently throwing up an error.
In any case, the first person to PM me with their gmail address gets my invite, and I will invite them when the app is good and ready for me to do so.
GO! :)

Invite (tentatively) taken!
mjb was the winner! :)

I was able to access the invite screen, however, it appears I don't have any invites quite yet.
When I do, I'll be giving it to mjb. Any further invites I get I will announce here.

Perhaps it has something to do with the number of days using the app, or one's Ingress activity?
Not sure.

Be sure to request an invite from the official site as well.

That's where I got my invite. Can't remember exactly how long it took. Might have been a few weeks.

I got an invite, but was wondering where you got the apk to sideload it?

I am in Christchurch :-)

Have you first checked to see that you can't already download it from the official Play store?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nianticproject.ingress

If you can't, I just Google'd it and found the APK fairly quickly. :)

Not available in the store due to country restrictions. You side-loaded it, how did you find a trustable source?

I am a bit paranoid about what I install on my phone because I need to trust it (i have a Galaxy Nexus mostly to ensure I get security updates).

So I guess the question is not how to find the apk, but how to know it is the genuine article and has no back-doors in it?

This seems trustable: http://www.mgamerzproductions.com/

I will use that. Might try to check SHA1 as well :-)

I installed from http://www.mgamerzproductions.com/

File: com.nianticproject.ingress-1.08.1.apk
SHA1: 84f928d562829902fa57f7ed2f013ae94d994c81
SHA calculated using AFV (Android File Verifier).

I still don't know if file compromised, but at least you can get the same compromised file as me if it is!

I got my APK (1.08.1) from someone who posted it on xda.
The SHA1 is the same as yours above.
Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean it isn't compromised.
