One for Wellington users, I'm thinking about carpooling and have no idea what is deemed a reasonable amount to charge as have always taken the train into town from Paraparaumu.

I now have to drive due to medical reasons so thought I'd offer to drive others in via the Let's Carpool website but I don't know what to ask for, has anyone got any suggestions?

I'll be driving all the time and using my own car.

I'm pretty sure that Inland Revenue publish guidelines for per-kilometre reimbursements of private vehicle use for employees. That would give you a pretty good idea of what to charge for the distance that you're travelling.

If you can't get anything from Inland Revenue then the local chamber of commerce should also have this information.

Figures that you get from either of these sources will give you a representation of the total operating costs for your vehicle. Don't fall into the trap of just charging for petrol because there's a lot more cost in tyres, servicing, brake wear, etc.

Might as well OP drive a taxi if he needs to cover everything.

The way I see it, OP needs to drive the car anyway for medical reason. A bit of extra money to cover daily cost and reducing carbon footprint should be enough.

How many km's each way? How much does the train cost each way. How much is car parking going to be? Carparking and fuel are the major costs, and as you are going in anyway, if you split those costs between the number of people, that should give you the figure. Should be less than the train cost, but travelling by car on that motorway can take a lot longer than the train trip I have heard.

I give $30 a week for a lift to work and back with a local, its a 50km round trip each day. (Whangaparaoa -> Albany , AKL)

Thanks XPD, that's what I had thought about right so I'll go with that. It's 50km each way from Kapiti to Wellington so twice the distance but I'd be happy with $30
