Hi There!

We recently purchased 1KG of this after having a delicious sample at a show. We have found it to be exceptionally salty, and I wondered how others found it (obviously it's relative), or if the recipe has changed recently that anyone has noticed?

We have bought the 1kg pack in the past and found it to be OK - no different to other brands.

I actually took one back to the shop thinking there was something wrong with it.. it was totally gross. The shopkeeper recommended a different brand and Ive never eaten Hellers since. (that was in 2009)

We buy that sometimes and its nice. Salty, but not compared to other streaky bacon & the manuka adds a little zing! of flavour to it.

We buy that sometimes and its nice. Salty, but not compared to other streaky bacon & the manuka adds a little zing! of flavour to it.

Well I called Customer Service and nicely explained our experience, she stated there should be no more salt in streaky than anything else they sell, and will send out a voucher for replacement free of charge. She apologized and has asked for the batch number so she can investigate.

Can't ask for more than that.

I'm not really into streaky bacon but I usually buy their standard bacon and I've never noticed a salty taste. The only thing I don't like about it is the price!

Wow, I just got my voucher which replaces the product we purchased, and gives us $15 extra of hellers items as well!

good on them for that, shows that customer service is alive and well there!

Personally I usually eat Beehive streaky bacon, it is expensive, as all streaky bacon is but I love it!

Yes it was streaky.

Just had to come back in and tell you about the bacon Im having to eat now. Man I miss NZ bacon like you wouldnt believe!! American bacon cough is dreadful stuff. All fat and no meat, with no hope of getting anything different. Apparently there are 3 'cut' styles of bacon in the world....and Im stuck with the a$$ end of it. sighs
Want to say this......dont ever take NZ bacon for granted. Its the best in the world.

please please.....someone send me a BLT. I hear Fed Ex are quick. lol

Is it imported pork or NZ grown pork? I have noticed the imported stuff has a lot of liquid come out of it when you cook it and remains soggy after cooking and more grey in colour and tastless. While the NZ stuff seems to cook dry and is pinker and is perhaps a bit saltier.

Neither.. Im in the US and its all american. I soooo miss NZ bacon. Its to do with where they take the meat from on the pig. There seems to be 3 'cuts'.....Canada has one style, the US another and England the 3rd. NZ and Oz have the English style.. more meat and less fat. (Just a bit of useless info for you) :)

The reason the liquid comes out of the imported stuff and everything looks grey.. is because water has been forced into it. They are allowed a certain amount.. but often exceed the limit. It adds to the weight so they save money and you get an inferior quality meat. Dont buy it.

However.. if you have bought it you can partially fix that issue by turning up the heat on the stove. If you have it too low the water leaches and the meat 'stews' instead of frying. It happens with ground meat a lot. (hamburger mince)

It seems to be quite common to inject water into meat in NZ. I think they do the same with chicken breasts in packets. The other thing I have noticed is that stick all the fat at the back of the meat packet where you can't see it. I don't think any of that should be allowed.
