Its going to be another tough winter for sniffles.......

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10873851

I had the Flu jab once and as a result got full blown influenza 3 weeks later. Coincidence? I didnt think so. I never got the shot again as a result and have never had the flu since.

What are peoples thoughts on the flu season and reporting of it? (proper flu - 3 days of hot and cold flushes, liquid from every orifice...Not simple man flu)

Ive read a few opposing views - this being one of them : http://www.beyondconformity.co.nz/BlogRetrieve.aspx?BlogID=1598

It makes for interesting reading (as the internet does :-)
However, you can see the point when most reporters use stats based on 'flu like symptoms' and not actual influenza.

Any article the uses stats normally turns me of immediately.....

The vaccine doesn't contain live viruses, so you can't have caught it from the vaccine. Plus it takes a couple of weeks to give full protection. If you caught it towards the end of that, you might still get it (it can take nearly a week for symptoms to become present.)

Your anecdote is not empirical scientific evidence any more than my anecdote, is that since I started getting the vaccine I've not had one flu.

Beyondconformity.co.nz looks a bit dodgy to me.

There are hundreds of strains of influenza VIRUSEs. The nz vac is decided every year to guess the mosy likely strains. Obviously you caught another strain from a traveller either directly or by a few degrees of separation.

Btw the influenza pandemic happens every year. Someone had nothing to write about.

Definately a coincidence.

It was also a very high likelihood of being a different strain to the one you were protected against or you have a poor immune system and the vaccine didn't offer effective protection. It's also worth noting that very few vaccines are 100% effective for every person.

The funny thing about getting the flu soon after the shot, was that 50+ other people went down with the same flu after getting a shot (it was a major work site and a company initiated health policy)

It was odd as it was a large work site and most of these people never actually came into contact with each other or other sources of the flu. As a health and safety rep at the time, we did some comprehensive investigation on the occurrence and the only commonality was the flu jab.
So unless they all contracted it from the nurse administering the shot at the time, it was left unanswered.....

How did you know you had influenza? The only way to know for sure is a nasal swab did you get that tested? Lots of viruses give similar symptoms but are not the influenza virus

We get the flu jab offered free at work, but I'm going to take my chances.

Almost all houses that burnt down in recent times all had kitchen sinks. Coincidence?!

Correlation does not always mean to causation. It sounds like someone in your workplace spread an unprotected strain of the flu virus. A large group of colleagues all getting the same bug is a pretty common occurrence.

Yes it was confirmed - its going back at least 15 years though and various medical professionals were involved at the time for study purposes. The results conveniently disappeared even though the union pushed hard for a copy. Thats just a personal experience I had.

Im more interested in peoples thoughts of the current reporting and if you will rush out and do anything different.

Scaremongering such as people queuing for tamiflu makes for interesting reporting. I wonder how many actually buy into it.

It's impossible to get the flu from a flu virus. Clearly if you believe this is incorrect you should be contacting the manufacturers because it's going to require major research into the current way vaccines are created and throw 100+ years of medicine out the door!

I didnt say it happened to me, but that was just my experience that coincided with the flu shot..
Youve had experiences where it didnt happen. I kinda got your point some posts ago......

I had my (free) flu shot yesterday. Same as every year for the past 10 years. Haven't had a flu in all that time. Had a couple of stonking flus in the 4-5 years before that though - sweats, joint aches, fever, delerium, the works. I don't miss it.

That's exactly what you said.

i.e. if it wasn't a coincidence, then it was the flu jab that gave it to you! What did you mean exactly?
