Just as I left the house to drive into work this morning, around 5:50am, I saw a bright greeny-blue fireball trailing debris off to the west, with an apparent position south of the moon. After a couple of seconds it exploded in a bright flash.

One other person here saw it this morning too. Anyone else notice it? I've been trying to see if there are any known suspects. At meteor entry temperature everything looks blinding white, so I wonder whether this wasn't orbital junk with fuel or something else contributing to the colour.

Yeah, saw it too. Put it down to a shooting star at the time but much much brighter so must have been the same thing. I only saw the end of it unfortunately but what made me look up was that I was seeing some really bright glow all around me so this must have been pretty bright!

Nah, that'd be rainbow coloured, not just green-blue.

When the powerlines go off they usually go with a big green coppery flash, seen it before out Titirangi way a few years back in the bad weather.

I've seen numerous blue-green shooting stars/meteors over the years. I've always just assumed that the rocks must have contained some copper, hence the colouring

That's the colour alright, but as I understand it most meteorites are either iron/nickel, or silicate rocks.
