There is a Chinese proverb

"May you live in interesting times, and attract the attention of important people."

I watch maybe 5-10 you tube videos a day and I cannot remember the last time I watched one form New Zealand. Now maybe that's me being from the northern hemisphere.

My question what is going on in New Zealand You Tube?

Media on the internet is without a doubt the direction of supply. So are we keeping up?

Anyone who has any doubts on this check the hatchet job that GMA did on the third largest YouTube star Jenna Marbles They (main stream Media) are worried for a commentary on this watch Ana Kasparian from Young turks

The report on the interview

Its an ancient curse, not a proverb.

I dont really see what the first part of your post (NZ originating youtube videos) has to do with the second part (mainstream media vs youtube)

I mostly watch gaming related youtube videos - starcraft2 matches, so very little from NZ there. But I wouldn't expect there to be much anyway

I hit the +1 button but had to post this too. I don't any relation between your perceived "lack of NZ content on YouTube" and a GMA interview...

Ok
I must remember that what is in my head isnt readable and I have to fill in the blanks.

"May you live in interesting times, and attract the attention of important people."

I was thinking it just sounded right.

Maybe I will re write it

"May we all live in interesting times, just look at You Tube"

So the point!!

One. You Tube is an opportunity for a country like New Zealand with few resources. A product that doesn't cost a lot of money but attracts a lot of attention

If you need proof of this look at jenna marbles

For further proof that it is the way to go

is that Main stream media is worried and are starting to attack you tube or buy it up!

a respected reporter Ana agrees

SO

are we doing anything here in nz with you tube?

Plenty of Kiwis already embracing the idea. You just need to know where to look for it.

You cannot monitise Youtube videos with a NZ youtube account yet which maybe a small reason why there are not a large amount of NZ Youtubites who make videos.

I know of a few overseas YouTubites who make quite a good income making videos with a lot of people viewing them.

Well that should be addressed although I am not sure how many you tubers initially did it as a way to make money

Probably not many started out that way, but without monetization there will be very few people out there who can produce large amounts of quality content, instead relying on just doing it in ther spare time.

Just found out that as far as i can see YOU CAN monetize your video in NZ
This guy shows a how to video

Basically make sure your country setting is set to New Zealand on You tube

Bruce Simpson, the aardvark.co.nz guy, makes a lot of Youtube content relating to his pulse-jet engine and model aircraft work. He makes an amount of income from them, enough to make it worthwhile doing, but not enough to live off...
I do not know if he does it under an NZ Youtube login, or a US one.

General comment online is that Jenna marbles Grosses about 3-4 mil USD from her channel. She has

Uploads:140  Subscribers:8,515,804  Video Views:1,083,686,853  Channel Views:106,556,815
I also think I heard that they only start paying you over a certain amount of views
anyway you can do some maths on those figures

I wouldn't know if my account is a NZ one or not but I definitely would've said I'm from New Zealand in the registration part.

I'm happily making money off a channel, only restriction I found was having to be 18 and the fact I'll have to cancel and presumably sign up for Adsense again to change the payout currency

Last month I made a bit over $23 USD off 18,700 views

I have been monetizing my videos for over a year now (March 2012 was my first payout) and currently have  $168US in my adsence account for payment out. Aiming for $500 before I pay it out. However in recent months it has slowed down so that expectation might be a bit high now.
