I don't know if it is just me, but has anyone else noticed that a lot more people think it is OK to chat amongst each other and have phone conversations in the middle of a film?

I went to see Man of Steel.  What a stunning movie, in terms of VFX.  It did a great job sucking me in to the atmosphere and making me feel part of the scene.  And then that tosser in front of me gets a phone call and answers it before leaving the cinema.  Then the drama starts, theater gets quiet while the story gets a bit emotional...All of a sudden, some foreigner starts jabbering to his friend in his native tongue behind me.  All the while some other woman near the front of the cinema pulls out her S3 with that dinner plate sized screen illuminating her and the 6 people behind.

I almost felt like turning around and telling the chatter box to leave if he wanted to chat with his friend.  But being the quiet, non-abusive, un-confrontational person that I am, I just sat on that thought and stewed in my seat.  I shouldn't have to though.

I go to the movies once a week on average, which is more than the average I guess, but it just seems to get worse and worse almost every time I go.  I like nothing more than going to a late 8PM or 9PM screening after dinner.  Recently, I have been going during my week-day offs in the early afternoon when nobody is there to ruin the experience.

To those of you who know who you are.  Please turn your phone OFF when the movie starts.  Don't talk to your mate about the weekend half way through either.

I tell people to put their phone away in a tone that doesn't invite discussion.

The phone pulling out and lighting up whole isle annoys me, quite often see that.
Can't say I've had to put up with people talking yet, that is something I really would have to do something about.

Mind if I ask where you go ? Sounds like a good place to avoid the movies :-P
Hope your movie nights get better

It's taken ages to arrive here in New Zealand. About ten years ago I was in Sydney and went to a movie in a cinema in the CBD, and the number of people talking on the phone was rather large.

Watch movies at home, cheaper, warmer, comfortable, better beverages, problem solved.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I'm more than happy to tell people to be quiet. I'd say, thanks to the overwhelming cost of going to the cinema these days, that almost everybody in the cinema is trying to watch the film and not chat/check up on things so won't mind a small 'chat' between patrons if it means no more.

I've had kids take phone calls near me and i've gone down and politely asked them to stop. One chance. They've done it again and it's been a different tone. Everyone knows the tone. Mum's and Dad's do it very well. They didn't do it again. People actually thanked me afterwards which felt odd as all I wanted to do was enjoy the film.

I used to go every week here in Tauranga to wind down after doing 70 hour working weeks.  Then a few years ago every time more than one would have there phone out texting or talking.  Ruined the whole cinema experience so I stopped going and havent been back.  Thats when I built my first HTPC

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard  graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner,  Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

Yup, had it many times, not as much at our local cinema where we are now, but the old one, quite often.

People talking (even translating entire dialogue to their partner), phones beeping/ringing, people getting up and down every 10mins (left the kid in the car maybe ?), kids running around, teenagers sitting in front row being rowdy giggling at everything on screen....

Hire the movie "God Bless America", he has a great way of dealing with people who talk in the cinema

St Luke's and Westgate are the main ones I visit. Westgate is a little tired and the cinema experience I find is a bit better at St. Luke's. Event Cinema in Albany I visit if I am traveling north and going out with family.

The only way I find I can avoid it is by going during work hours on my day off or, by going to movies that everyone has already seen.

I don't have a TV. I can't afford an expensive home entertainment system and my home is far from warm. Nothing that is home theater comes anywhere close to a cinema experience in my opinion. People should just behave and if they can't, they should get kicked out.

I'll take a NERF gun in next time and shoot all the offenders.

The last time I went to a cinema a woman in front of me thought it would be a good idea to bring her baby along with her.

Baby did not keep quiet. To top it off she decided that the cinema was also a great place to breast feed.

Unfortunately there is never anybody around these days to make sure that people behave.
I remember in the older days there use to be cinema staff that would stand around and keep an eye on things. It was not uncommon to see someone being told off by a staff member.

Seriously?  Breastfeeding in a cinema with a new born?  Baby's have no place in a cinema.  I too remember the days when I was young where the staff would come around with little flash lights and kick people out.  Too bad it never happens anymore.

Nothing wrong with breast feeding, it would have calmed the child.
