I am currently on a vegan diet (not for animal rights purposes but for potential health reasons - but that is another story).

I had occasion to order a bunch of pizza's for co-workers doing a major networking job in the weekend.

I ordered Hell's vegan offering which is refried beans, onions, avocados, onions, salsa, jalapeno peppers and capsicums.

It was not nice. Something (either the beans or avocados) made the topping very mushy and (this is personal) the peppers made it way too spicy for me.

I ended breaking my diet and eating a piece of the regular one!

Surely one can make a vegan pizza that is more tasty?

I was thinking of a nice base, a tasty tomato topping with onions, mushrooms, capsicums and possibly olives.

Somebody at Hells needs to taste their offerings.

I normally just design my own vegetarian pizza which works quite well :)

I did that at the Mediterranean Warehouse in Newtown. That was nice. I'll know better next time, if there is going to be one.

We had hell pizza on Friday night (from Pukekohe shop) and it was revolting...definitely gone down hill from previous dealings.

Cooked avocado on anything is horrible and to be fair, I am yet to have a single vegan thing I've thought I could have a second helping of let alone live off! :)

I've had that one and feel exactly the same way, and I like spicy food. Also that recipe has been exactly the same for eight years or so. It's a poor effort.

Plus I paid $71 for 4 pizzas! And they are no better than Pizza Hut or Dominos. All use the conveyer belt style of baking rather than pizza ovens which give the base a much crisper base.

No more for me!

I actually don't think ANY of Hell Pizza are that great. And Domino's? I will tell you a story...

It was 1993. I was in Philadelphia (actually just outside, in Malvern/Paoli). It was about -20c and I drove from the hotel to a Domino's place. Ordered a cheese pizza - because how can anyone go wrong with a cheese pizza, right?

Back at the hotel, it was horrible. Tasteless, disgusting. So I promised never to go to a Domino's again (and my wife knows when I say never going somewhere again, it holds).

Forward to 2011 here in Wellington. To celebrate the launch of their mobile app the Domino's PR folks in New Zealand sent me a gift: a bottle of pinot noir, a red/white tablecloth and vouchers to get some Domino's pizza. It looked cool, so I waited until 7pm, drove down to the local Domino's (which seems to be a family-owned franchise) and when I presented the voucher the father looked at it as he couldn't understand (an Asian family). He called the daughter who looked at the voucher and in front of everyone asked "who gave you this?" I said "Domino's"... "No, we can't accept this. It could even be fake. No way we accept this here."

So I walked away, for the second time in my life, disgusted at Domino's. This time really not going back.

I work as a driver at Hell Pizza and also cut/pack the pizzas and fry/box sides, and can say that oven baked pizzas really wouldn't be viable for the volume that we put out on a busy night. There are quite a few local pizza/italian stores around Auckland that do oven-baked pizzas.

In comparison to Dominos and Pizza Hut you get what you pay for essentially; the ingredients cheeses, sauces, meats and vegetables all fresher and better quality than the others (the pizzas are $5 for a reason, they certainly aren't made at a loss)

I definitely can agree that we could do more as far as vegan pizzas go, there are many vegans/vegetarians that order from us and the range is lacking there.

And a code for those getting delivered: "stayin" - free delivery on orders over $20 : )

I guess what is surprising that four pizzas, not delivered, cost me $71.

Yet I can get an oven baked gourmet pizza at the Mediterranean Warehouse in Wellington for the same price effectively.

And as per my original comment, the vegan standard offering is pretty awful.

LMAO.. I used to deliver to hells and dominos and 90% of the ingredients come from the same companies. Only the fresh produce didn't.

I have a mate working at dominos in the same area as me and I've checked their fridge out, we certainly aren't using the same cheeses and sauces, may have been different back then but who knows.

It's different packaging, but the supplier is the same... both hells and dominos have their own packaging applied.
Sauce for instance used to come from here but they probably won't tell you that.

That's a shame. It's one of the very few of their pizzas I DO like!
