I'm looking for a towbar mounted ski and snowboard rack. I can't find any online in NZ but I have seen them on cars up Mt Ruapehu.

Anyone come across these in NZ before?

Try asking the parts department at a dealership for your make of car.

Or consult a towbar specialist like Best Bars who make most of the approved towbars for NZ franchises.

Be careful with those. If they block number plates, then they are technically not legal in NZ.

Same with bike racks.

Yeah, i've seen cars (and been in them) get ticketed for covering their plate with a bike rack. Thule do a fancy bike rack with a number plate holder and lights which makes it legal. The only downside is it's expensive and you have to get a third plate sent to you from the NZTA/LTNZ (can't remember which).

Strictly speaking, yes, but I've been doing this for years with my bike & rack, with no consequence (nor do I know anyone else that has been pinged). Personally, I think it's worth winging it given the low probability of being ticketed and the high cost/hassle of a legitimate solution.

Why not just get a supplementary registration plate and affix it somewhere visible? That's pretty easy and only costs $20.
