Hi all,
What would happen if a magnitude 8+ earthquake happened directly under mt Ruapehu what would the damage be to the surrounding area besides the damage you'd expect from a magnitude 8+ earthquake?

If it triggered an eruption, it'd be pretty significant. Otherwise, I'd at least expect most of Ohakune to cease to exist and probably a fair chunk of Taranaki as well.

Anything over 8 in the central North Island would do massive damage whether or not a volcano is involved, especially if it was reasonably shallow.

The Richter scale isn't linear, so a 8 is significantly more than twice as powerful as a 4.

A 8 is a lot more than double a 4.  A 5 is 10x a 4 and a 6 10x a 5 so I guess a 8 is 10000 times bigger than a 4.  A 4 is about 15 tonnes of tnt, a 8 is 15 megatons according to Wikipedia.

I hope it wouldn't break the island into 2, think of the naming issues that'd cause!

If that happened there would be few of us left around to worry about it and nobody able to tell anyone about it on Twitter (or Geekzone).

The Mouth Islands and the South Island (the Brits will know why).
