Just thought I'd ask...

That juvenile, chippy teenager trying so hard (and failing dismally) to be funny is really starting to irritate me.

You are not alone.

My wife and I absolutely hate the Vodafone adds - really, really hate them. We mentally switch off when they come on. They are so stupid!

Clearly they are not aimed at our demographic.

I do find them irritating also.

Couldn't agree more. I have to assume they're trying to market towards the younger and/or sub-average-intelligence segment of the population at the moment.

Sure - aiming them at the demographic with the money to spend and the decision making power in homes would be dumb, right?

Kind of reminds me of when I went snowboarding at Turoa when I first emigrated and everyone else was speaking this odd language that I could barely understand but it appeared you had to have 'bro as every second word ;o)

Seems that to be cool you have to be dumb, a bit like the 'Ghost Chips' ad

They're playing on the supposed idiocy of his character - he was the star of Boy, when he was younger, so it's a pseudo-celeb type of ad.

i actually quite enjoy them, in context.

Yes that Ghost chips ad appeared to be aimed at people with an IQ smaller than their shoe size. But then, if you drink and drive, I guess your IQ probably IS smaller than your shoe size!

No argument here on that one! Maybe they want idiot kids to spend all their pocket money on their mobile phone, or that idiot kids will pester their parents to sign them up to Vodafone, not really sure the mentality behind it.

Also it could be that smarter people or either already with Vodafone or wouldn't change to them anyway, not sure that may be for the user to decide on a case by case basis.

I might be childish and of subpar intelligence but I'm not smart enough to work that out - I didn't even know that subpar is one word.

My family also enjoys the ads. We know several kids like the one in the ad which rather endears him to us despite one of them breaking and entering last year.

I personally don't mind the ads, although the way he speaks in the one with bonus minutes makes me and my girlfriend laugh because it sounds like "Boneless fish"

At the end of the day, there is no way that any one ad will make everyone happy, and the very fact you created a topic on how bad it is just goes to show that the advertising is working by getting people talking about it (Be it good talk or bad talk)

Personally i do find some of your comments a bit harsh "Really? You associate with people like that? On purpose?!" but that's your view and you are entitled to it.

I did a group market research session (before they aired) on the first set of vodafone ads using that kid - specifically business plan related.

Universally panned:

-I wouldn't take business advice from that kid
-He's funny but utterly irrelevant to me and my business
-what does he have to do with vodafone or it's services
etc etc.

I specifically said how much I hated the name and concept of a vodafone ninja.

Granted that was the 25-40, business owner set, so who knows.
