Yes I will look on trademe but perhaps someone knows -

In an attempt to get one of our sons dry at night we told him i'd buy him a microscope so he can see his amoebas ... now he has been dry for a couple of nights ... hmm ...

So anyone knows of cheap online shops that sell quality ones (err if you want budget as much under $100 as possible)?

in terms of amoebas or parameciums I might have to be creative there ...

Plenty of range here:

If making slides and keeping everything clean and understanding the mechanics are a bit much to begin with there seem to be some good books there and alternatives depending on age and level of interest.

They look pretty plasticy and toylike. You may pick up something on trademe. There are some you can plug into a computer. I tried one out a number of years ago, and it was really good.

Hey might not be exactly what you are looking for but we got an EyeClops for our kids at a garage sale and its truly amazing;

http://www.amazon.com/EyeClops-Bionic-Eye-Multizoom-Green/dp/B000PGRBGA

Seriously those goofy picture on Amazon are no joke, its actually that good. Its easy to use for kids (eg it has mounted LEDs so you dont have to reflect the light) and the magnification is amazing. It sees way more action that the actual microscope we got for our son as a birthday present.

If you could find one you would be impressed.

Edit: Looks like the new model can save images to a memory card http://www.fishpond.co.nz/Toys/EyeClops-BioniCam-Eyeclops/0720634610801

I bought a $40 scope from a toystore for my son but it was junk .

You can't buy good quality cheap microscopes in NZ, and most decent overseas suppliers will not ship here either.

I ended up buying a great quality $300 scope from  in the USA while passing through -- the same one was selling in NZ for around $1100.

Try dealextreme --
