I have discovered a couple of Low Powered FM radio stations in my city which I quite like, but they don't really have ads. For stations that transmit without ads, how do they make money to stay afloat?

I used to run one in the Auckland CBD called Twisted FM.

Never made any money, was done for the love of it (We did try to make some to pay costs, but never worked out).

I miss Twisted FM >.< - but yes, it's more of a hobby since you can automate things and still go to work etc.

I run one called "The Cheese". Most are run as a hobby, so no revenue is expected. Hence, no ads.

Some run ads and they can make up to $10k per year before APRA and PPNZ expect a cut (going from memory here).

It's around $780 per year for PPNZ and APRA inclusive of FM and Internet transmission. A flat fee.

No licence required for the transmitter but it must meet specifics (1 WATT EIRP is one of those specifics).
