I somehow think this is rather expensive, you can pick up this phone for $349 and yet, it's $19 per week ($988 per year) to rent, especially since the bedroom suite below it is $10 extra per week and you get quite a bit more. I wonder if this is a pricing mistake on their mailer or for real...

Just went onto their website, $19 per month on a 24mo contract which works out $1976 over those 24mo, I wonder how many people are stupid enough to buy this?

19*24=456, which would be reasonable but, it's $19 per week, so yeah.

They target the poor.
They say it's a good idea - new items, replaced if needed and so on.
But they of course, don't tell you the total cost - and there are stiff penalties if you break the contract.

Not much different to loan sharks really.

also note the "from $19 a week"

I would say the 19 is for people with good credit and goes up from there for people with less than good credit

Its the same as DTR. They price gauge something fierce. Its all there in the fine print, its upto the customer to do the calculations and see if its a wise investment.

Companies like this make a lot of money by making the everyday luxury items "affordable", breaking the inflated price into bite-sized chunks to allow for easy budgeting.

It's an age-old ploy to prey on the weak and poor and works well forbothsides - provided the customer isn't too good at maths.

Christmas hampers are similar.

I like how in Australia, advertisers must state what the monthly payments are, and also have a total amount payable after the contract length.

This should be here as well.

And should also be on all fee's charged, like at the moment noelleeming.co.nz has the "apply for GEM visa and you can be shopping online in 60 seconds and interest free for 6 - 12 months" thing going on. However it's not till you get into the fine print on the apply page about the $110 dollars worth of fees just to get the card and use it. Sure no interest but a crap load of fee's on day 1

My partner and I rented a fridge off them (RRP $800) @ $14pw. We figured we were wasting our money so after about 6 months we offered to buy the fridge off them. This is where it gets stupid because even though it was 6 months old and we'd already paid >$300 in our weekly rental they said they wouldn't go below $750.

So we got them to take it away and went and bought the same fridge brand new from 100% for $699.
